Cooking School at Historical Hotel in the Heart of San Miguel de Allende

In the markets of San Miguel de Allende, a historical central Mexican city, crates spill over with great big bell peppers, eggplants, and exotic produce such as cactus pears and sweet guava. You'll have a chance to soak up all the colorful sights and smells on a market tour led by a chef from Sazon, the cooking school at Casa de Sierra Nevada. Afterward, the chef will lead a hands-on kitchen seminar covering San Miguel's diverse regional fare.

Lush garden paths wind through stone arches and lantern-lit courtyards at Casa de Sierra Nevada, a compound of colonial-style buildings. Superior and deluxe rooms, located in the hotel's main building, were lauded by Harper's Bazaar for their décor, which "pays homage to colorful local tradition in textiles and handcrafts." Junior suites, housed in an old mansion a few minutes' walk away, feature dark polished wood floors, period antiques, and working fireplaces.

Casa de Sierra Nevada also boasts an upscale dining room. Andanza serves entrees such as herbed duck served with jicama, orange, and cilantro salad on fine china and linens.

San Miguel del Allende: Cobblestone Streets and Historical Town Square

San Miguel de Allende is a picturesque colonial city in the highlands of central Mexico. The center of town is famous for its steep hills and narrow cobblestone streets, as along with its beautifully preserved 17th- and 18th-century buildings, known for their colorful façades and imposingly large doorways. One of the city's architectural highlights is the iconic Parroquia de San Miguel Arcangel, with its pale pink and orange Neo-Gothic façade, intricate carvings, and double towers. The Museo Casa Allende offers a taste of local history, but if you’re in the mood for a museum off the beaten path, head to the privately owned traditional Mexican mask museum or La Esquina, an impressive collection of handmade Mexican toys housed in a private mansion in the town’s central square.
