Historic Hillside Hotel Overlooking San Francisco Bay
Casa Madrona Hotel & Spa—located just across the Golden Gate Bridge from San Francisco—was once a single bayside mansion, built in 1885 by a lumber baron. It’s expanded quite a bit since then, and is now a collection of cottages and a New England–style building that cascades down a Sausalito hillside. Visitors can still stay in the original house, now listed on the National Register of Historic Places, which has classic flourishes such as clawfoot tubs. But the hotel’s overall aesthetic has skewed modern over the years—in the new wing, rooms have marble bathrooms and french doors that open out onto bay-view balconies.
The hotel’s modern amenities include a brand-new spa, opened in 2011, which specializes in water therapies, and Poggio, an onsite classic Northern Italy eatery. The menu changes daily at the restaurant, highlighting local ingredients as well as herbs and vegetables grown organically on the property.
Casa Madrona sits in the heart of historic downtown Sausalito, just steps from the city’s water walkway and views of Alcatraz and the San Francisco skyline. It’s also only one block from ferries to downtown San Francisco and Fisherman’s Wharf.
Sausalito, California: Hilly Small Town Across the Bay from San Francisco
The small town of Sausalito lies just north of San Francisco, about a 15-minute straight shot over the Golden Gate Bridge. The bayside hamlet is fairly removed from the city’s hustle and bustle, though, with mild weather and a narrow main road. It’s an easy place to explore by foot, especially the waterfront promenade. Stroll this strip to visit the high-end boutiques and dine in some of the seafood restaurants, many of which have outdoor patios. You can also walk past the few cannery buildings left over from Sausalito’s early days as a fishing town, as well as the many docks lined with hundreds of luxury yachts.
Because Sausalito is positioned at the entryway to the Bay Area, it’s near the many wineries of the Napa and Sonoma valleys. Casa Madrona Hotel & Spa can arrange transportation, tastings, and tours.
