Hotel at a Glance: Chateau Inn & Suites
The town of Spring Lake was settled in 1884, and Chateau Inn & Suites was built just four years after. The sprawling inn is set within walking distance from the Atlantic Ocean. It’s a founding member of the Historic Inns of Spring Lake, an association that honors 11 area resorts with deep historical roots in the Spring Lake community. Indeed, its gray-shingle siding, bright-red awnings, and open-air porches hark back to an earlier time.
- In-room amenities include 40-inch LCD TVs. Classic suites come with jacuzzis, and luxury parlors add wood-burning fireplaces, balconies, and wet bars.
- Start the day right with an included continental breakfast buffet in the antique-laden Brighton Room each morning; return in the afternoon for complimentary snacks and tea.
- Catch a flick: Unlimited DVD rentals are available during your stay.
- Rent a bicycle to explore nearby Divine Park, which encompasses a scenic inland lake.
Spring Lake, New Jersey: Historical Seaside Town with Affluent Beginnings
The quaint seaside village of Spring Lake owes its development to the Philadelphia Centennial Exposition of 1876. Stately Georgian mansions housed exhibits during the fair; once the fair closed, wealthy New Yorkers and Philadelphians transported the houses to open plots of farm land around Spring Lake, and a town was born. Thanks to its affluent beginnings, Spring Lake became a coastal resort town for barons of the Gilded Age, on par with Bar Harbor, Maine, and Newport, Rhode Island. Today, the town’s elegant 2-mile promenade along the Atlantic Ocean retains its air of sophistication; the boardwalk is free of tourist shops and glowing neon signs.
You can get a glimpse of mid-19th-century life at the Historic Village at Allaire, home to a working blacksmith shop, bakery, and carpentry shop. Or, head to the Sea Girt Lighthouse, whose interior has been fully restored to its original splendor from 1896.
