Lauderdale-By-The-Sea, Florida: Barrier Island with Numerous Dining and Shopping Spots
Lauderdale-By-The-Sea is only 7 feet above sea level and surrounded by bright-blue ocean. The entire town sits on a barrier island sandwiched between the Atlantic Ocean and the Intracoastal Waterway, about 45 minutes north of Miami and 15 minutes north of downtown Fort Lauderdale. Anglins Fishing Pier is a nice spot to catch snapper and mackerel, and you can buy bait and rent fishing rods onsite. Scuba diving and snorkeling are also popular pastime in Lauderdale-By-The-Sea—just 100 yards offshore are coral reefs full of spiny lobsters, sea fans, and tropical fish. They’re some of the only reefs in South Florida that can be reached by swimming.
To explore more of the town, jump on the Pelican Hopper, a free shuttle that runs from the fishing pier and beaches to local shopping centers. There are also a number of food and entertainment options.
