Alexandria, Minnesota was settled as a fort in 1859, but its Nordic history goes back a bit further—according to town legend, the tiny berg was visited by Norsemen in 1362. You can learn more about the alleged Viking visit at the Runestone Museum, whose exhibits include a 40-foot-long Viking ship called Snorri. The museum is also home to the Kensington runestone, a 200-pound greywacke slab that’s covered in ancient runes—proving, for some, that the Vikings visited Minnesota in the 14th century (other scholars maintain it’s a hoax).
Be sure to take a picture in front of the kitschy Big Ole Viking Statue, a 28-foot-tall fiberglass statue built for the 1965 World’s Fair.
It wouldn’t be a real Minnesota vacation without penciling in time to visit a lake. Lake Miltona and Lake Le Homme Dieu offer ice-fishing in the winter, and swimming and boating in the summer. You can also sample wines at Carlos Creek Winery or go biking along the Central Lakes Trail, a 55-mile long paved corridor.
