Cozy Mountainside Hotel in European-Style Village
The three mountains surrounding Delta Sun Peaks Resort serve as a center of activity when summer rolls around, especially for mountain biking and hiking. And there's plenty more to do in the periphery—fly-fishers and standup paddleboarders share the water at nearby Heffley Lake, and the resort has its own lush golf course.
Back at the mountain base, the resort buildings have a European charm to them: gray, gabled roofs and pastel façades huddle around cobblestone streets. In the hotel's lower lobby, you'll find Mantles Restaurant and Lounge. It serves fresh Pacific seafood and wines from regional vineyards, and the menu changes daily. A flickering fireplace lends a calming ambiance and a luxurious Santa Claus emergency-escape route to the lounge, which has both a bar and a family-friendly dining area.
The one-bedroom suites are all located upstairs on the second, third, and fourth floors; each suite has its own balcony that overlooks the mountain village. You can take a dip in the resort's heated outdoor pool or hop between the three outdoor hot tubs.
Sun Peaks, British Columbia: Mountain Adventures Steps from Charming Resort Town
No matter where you turn in Sun Peaks, you can see the mountains; they tower majestically seemingly from all angles. After the snow melts in early summer, the mountains come alive with bikers and hikers. To save energy, you can catch a ride up the mountain with your bike on Sunburst Chairlift. It's open daily from late June through Labor Day. Once you get up top, there are 36 mountain-biking trails to choose from, plus a dirt-jumping zone.
The Sunburst Chairlift will also drop off hikers mid-mountain, where they can access 15 hiking trails. From mid-July to mid-August, the vibrant hillside meadows are covered with wildflowers such as tiger lilies and the mauve-colored fireweed. Keep an eye out for resident wildlife, including black bears, coyotes, moose, cougars, and bald eagles. The resort officially opens for the winter season on November 17; after that, you can take advantage of numerous ski trails and terrain parks.
