Sonaisali Island Resort: Secluded South Pacific Resort with Fijian Dance Performances
On Friday evenings, performers take the stage clad in grass skirts and colorful dresses for dancing, chanting, and singing at Sonaisali Island Resort. The performance—known as a Fijian Meke and traditionally performed for special occasions—is part of a longstanding ritual by which stories, legends, and historical events have been handed down from one generation to the next. It’s just one of the many ways you can learn about Fijian culture on the resort grounds—try your hand at Fijian cooking, language classes, or weaving coconut-leaves.
Walk to the beach from your room: The resort, which is separated from the mainland by a small lagoon, is completely surrounded by the South Pacific. You can see the ocean from the private balconies of beachfront hotel rooms. Walk to the palm-lined beaches and you can enjoy an afternoon of catamaran sailing and windsurfing (extra fees apply).
To see more of the island—as well as coral reefs populated by sea turtles, reef sharks, and colorful fish—simply arrange a sailing or snorkeling trip at the front desk (extra fees apply).
Dinners made from homegrown produce: Planted with lush vegetable gardens and tropical orchards, the resort’s grounds are just as beautiful as the surrounding ocean. But they’re not just for looks—they also supply seasonal produce to the onsite restaurants and tropical continental breakfast (included in this Getaway). Visit Plantation Restaurant to dine al fresco on a nine-course “degustation menu” that highlights local cuisine; dishes may include seared scallops and squid or braised pork belly in a blood orange glaze.
Beachfront massages and spa treatments: Treatments at Frangipani Spa rely on local ingredients, too, including bananas and coconut milk. Therapists here perform fragrant massages and body scrubs on an open-air deck or along the beachfront.
