Hotel At a Glance: Eaglewood Resort and Spa

Situated almost exactly a half-hour drive from Chicago's Loop, this sprawling resort in the northwest suburbs houses a spa, a championship golf course, onsite family fun activities, and two restaurants. The kid-friendly property offers an area shuttle to several nearby attractions, including Legoland Discovery Center, Medieval Times, the Stratford Square Mall, and Dave & Buster's.

  • Distance to downtown Chicago: 25 miles
  • Lodge decor: soaring ceilings, a big fireplace in the lobby, and views of the surrounding landscape
  • Snowshoeing and cross-country skiing on trails crisscrossing the resort's grounds
  • Large breakfast buffet at the onsite Burnham's restaurant; the Prairie River Fire Pit and Patio serves classic American fare (including gluten-free options).
  • Take a dip in the heated indoor pool, where movies are shown on a big screen every night.
  • Strikes and spares: The resort has its own private bowling alley.
  • Onsite spa: Treatments include massages, body wraps, and facials.

Chicago's Northwest Suburbs: Family Fun Close to the City

Each of Chicago's northwest suburbs—including Itasca, Schaumburg, Bloomingdale, and Elk Grove Village—has its own personality and its own array of cultural and entertainment offerings distinct from the Windy City. Itasca, for instance—home to Eaglewood Resort and Spa—has a collection of Victorian homes and a quaint downtown area filled with boutique shops and a charming square.

In fact, despite Chicago's proximity (about a half-hour drive), you could find plenty to do without ever stepping foot in the Loop. Head over to Schaumburg's Woodfield Mall, one of the largest shopping centers in the country, when it's time for some retail therapy, or visit Lynfred Winery, the oldest continually operating winery in Illinois, for a wine-tasting. If you're looking to pick up the pace, Chicago Indoor Racing offers 86,000 square feet of indoor go-kart racing.

Nature lovers will want to check out the Ned Brown Preserve—better known as Busse Woods—where cross-country skiing and hiking trails provide up-close glimpses of local flora and fauna. Afterwards, bring the whole family to Medieval Times, a dinner theater where you can watch knights compete in horseback tournaments while you eat.
