Chama, New Mexico: Mountain Scenery and Historic Steam Train

Chama makes up for its small population with huge scenery. This little village sits at the foothills of the Cumbres Mountains, a few miles from the border of Colorado and worlds away from everywhere else. You’ll be right next to Carson National Forest, where you can fish, ski, snowshoe, and hike to your heart’s content. Keep an eye out for bighorn sheep and black bears as you crisscross the hundreds of miles of trails. Wheeler Peak, New Mexico’s tallest mountain, lies in the park’s eastern section.

While in Chama, don’t miss a chance to ride on the famous Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad, an authentic steam-operated train line that opened in 1880 and connects the Rocky Mountains to Santa Fe. The train runs through deep gorges and tight mountain passes, making for an exhilarating and historic ride. If you’re in the mood for a more urban environment, Santa Fe is about a 2-hour drive from Chama.

The hot tub was not operable and we were really looking forward to a nice soak. It's a nice getaway. Chama is not a hub of cosmopolitan activities, so be prepared to just relax. The best part is the cabins have gas stoves. Bring good knives and pans if you plan to cook. We will return every time this on groupon.
