Suites Overlooking British Columbia's Rivers, Mountains, and Forests

British Columbia's Coast Mountains surround the Executive Suites Hotel & Resort, Squamish, forming a dramatic backdrop of snowcapped peaks. This visually dramatic landscape—just 40 miles north of Vancouver—has been used in a number of movies and TV shows, including Rambo, MacGyver, and Men in Trees. You can enjoy the views while hiking through nearby Crumpit Woods, or while kicking back in the resort's indoor-outdoor pool. From the heated indoor side, you can paddle outside to watch the steam rise into the mountain air.

Each studio suite has a private balcony overlooking the craggy horizon. Dark-wood furnishings and forest-green linens echo the colors of the woods outside. Cook your own meals in a kitchen equipped with cookware, a fridge, and a dishwasher. Or you can head down to The Living Room Restaurant & Lounge for fresh seafood, such as a British Columbia wild sockeye salmon fillet and tequila-and-lime ceviche. Breakfast is served daily until 2 p.m.

Squamish, British Columbia: Mountain Biking and Whitewater Rafting in "Sea to Sky Country"

The region between Vancouver and Whistler is often called "Sea to Sky Country" because of the juxtaposition of ocean tributaries and mountain peaks. The Sea to Sky Highway traces the coastline from Horseshoe Bay, just west of Vancouver, up to the municipality of Squamish. Along the way, you pass waterfalls, lakes, and the Stawamus Chief, one of world's largest granite monoliths. The area is renowned for rock climbing, with more than 1,200 routes.

In the warmer months, Squamish and its surrounding mountains are a hive of outdoor activity. Whitewater rafting is a popular pursuit on the Squamish, Elaho, and Cheakamus Rivers. A 30-minute drive north brings you to Whistler Olympic Park, the site of skiing events during the 2010 Vancouver Olympic Games. In the summer, mountain bikers flock to the park to pedal across 25 miles (40 km) of unpaved trails. In the winter, the nearby Whistler Blackcomb Ski Resort contains more than 200 ski trails and more skiable terrain than any of other resort on the continent—Condé Nast Traveler readers ranked it the No. 2 North American Ski Resort in a 2011 poll.
