Romantic Guest Rooms and Tea Socials at Historical Countryside Estate

In 2010, Fairville Inn Bed & Breakfast was named the mid-Atlantic’s most romantic inn in by readers of Karen Brown's travel guides. Based on appearance alone, it's easy to see why. The post-colonial estate—originally built between 1825 and 1837—is situated on 5 acres in the Brandywine Valley, a region famous for its historical mansions and charming countryside. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the inn takes its guests back to a quaint, peaceful time through antique touches and country decor.

Beyond the inn’s façade, its keepers take extra steps to maintain the romantic feel. Every afternoon, the inn hosts a tea social where you can sample treats baked by innkeeper Rick Carro. For an additional charge, grab a chocolate-truffle torte with key-lime caramel sauce or another after-dinner dessert, then take it back to your room.

Every morning, Rick becomes the inn’s chef to prepare three gourmet breakfast options. Omelets are made with vegetables from the estate gardens, and sausages are smoked in-house with applewood or mesquite. Rick takes special pride in his scrambled eggs, which the inn's website describes as "among the finest you will ever have."

The B&B's rooms are scattered amid a whitewashed Carriage House, the Main House, and the Springhouse, which was built atop the foundation of the original estate barn. Each house and room offers its own ambiance. Carriage House room No. 3 features a four-poster canopy bed, a seasonal fireplace, and a shaded deck looking out into the meadows. Springhouse room No. 1 has its own private entrance, and you can sleep on a canopied queen bed in Main House room No. 4.

The Brandywine Valley: Cultural and Historical Countryside

Located in Pennsylvania’s southeast corner, the Brandywine Valley is covered with hills, valleys, and historic landmarks. During the early 20th century, wealthy families began building extravagant estates here, many of which have been converted into modern-day museums. One such property—the Longwood Gardens—is located 3 miles from the inn. This 1,077-acre estate, once owned by the illustrious DuPont family, features 20 indoor and outdoor gardens, an extensive fountain system, and a rent-controlled Orchid House. The DuPont’s legacy also extends to the Hagley Museum and Library, the Winterthur Estate and Gardens, and the Nemours Mansion & Gardens—all across the state line in Delaware.

Five miles from Fairville Inn Bed & Breakfast, the Brandywine River Museum showcases the legacy of the Wyeths. N. C., Andrew, and Jamie Wyeth were all influential visual artists in their time, and you can admire the work of all three generations in this restored mill-house museum.
