B&B at a Glance: Fairville Inn Bed & Breakfast
A long-time member of the Select Registry, Distinguished Inns of North America, the Fairville Inn Bed & Breakfast was named the Mid-Atlantic’s most romantic inn by readers of Karen Brown’s travel guides in 2010, and is a repeat recipient of TripAdvisor’s Certificate of Excellence since 2011. The elegant estate is situated on 5 acres in the Brandywine Valley, a region famous for its mansions and idyllic countryside. The inn transports guests back to a quaint, peaceful time via the elegant country furnishings and decor that outfit the Main House—built between 1825 and 1837—as well as the Carriage House and Springhouse, which date from the 20th century.
- Complimentary afternoon tea with Inn-baked goods and a selection of cheeses is served daily.
- Enjoy a gourmet breakfast of omelets often made with vegetables from the estate gardens, and sausages that are smoked in-house with apple wood or mesquite.
- Must try dish: The innkeepers take special pride in their scrambled eggs, which they say are “among the finest you will ever have.”
- Where you’ll stay: The rooms are individually decorated and can be found in the yellow-painted Main House, the whitewashed Carriage House or the Springhouse, which was built on the foundation of the original estate’s barn.
Pennsylvania’s Brandywine Valley: Cultural and Historical Countryside
Located in Pennsylvania’s southeast corner, the Brandywine Valley features rolling terrain and historic landmarks. Wealthy families began building extravagant estates here during the early 20th century, and many of them have been converted into museums offering tours. Once owned by the DuPont family, the 1,100-acre Longwood Gardens boasts amazing outdoor and indoor gardens, including more than 4 acres of indoor conservatories that host a changing array of seasonal exhibits.
Other nearby attractions with a DuPont connection include the Hagley Museum and Library, the Winterthur Museum, and the Nemours Mansion & Gardens. Also close by: the Brandywine River Museum of Art, a onetime mill that now showcases the work of artists Andrew, Jamie, and N. C. Wyeth.

About Fairville Inn Bed & Breakfast
It’s easy to see why readers of the travel-guide series Karen Brown’s Guides voted Fairville Inn Bed & Breakfast the Most Romantic Inn in the Mid-Atlantic in 2010. For starters, the inn—originally built circa 1825–1837 and now listed on the National Register of Historic Places—hasn’t lost any of its Old-World charm. Queen Anne–style reproductions such as white-draped canopy beds are found throughout the property. In the Main House, guests can gather on the porch or in front of the living room’s fireplace to socialize. You can even take afternoon tea out on a shaded patio next to the original summer kitchen and root cellar. The 5-acre grounds also feature manicured gardens and an innkeepers’ quarters.
Located in the heart of the Brandywine Valley, Fairville Inn is close to many local attractions. From this point, visitors are fewer than 10 minutes away from the stunning horticultural displays at Longwood Gardens and the antique-laden Winterthur Museum. You can also tour many local wineries that are clustered along the Brandwine Valley wine trail.
