Days 1–4: Shanghai An overnight flight takes you to the megalopolis of Shanghai, which has a population almost three times bigger than New York City’s. Your group of up to 24 fellow guests makes their first stop on the tour at the breathtaking Yu Garden, built four centuries ago during the Ming Dynasty. Waterways meander past the garden’s striking rock formations, koi ponds, ornate pavilions, and a massive boulder made entirely of jade. You’ll spend the next two days at leisure, discovering for yourself why Shanghai is known as the “Paris of the East.” You can also opt to take a cruise along Suzhou’s scenic canals. This optional tour costs $85 per person and includes lunch.
Days 5–6: Xi’an After a brief flight west, you’ll set down in Xi’an, one of China’s oldest cities, to visit its primary claim to fame these days—the Terracotta Army, more than 8,000 life-sized stone soldiers dating back to around 250 BC. At night, an optional dumpling dinner and Tang Dynasty dance performance is available for an additional $48 per person.
Days 7–10: Beijing, Great Wall After a morning flight to Beijing, you’ll visit Tiananmen Square and the Forbidden City, an enormous imperial palace built during the 15th century. In addition to two days of leisure time, the last leg of the trip includes a tour of the iconic Great Wall—undoubtedly one of the largest construction projects ever attempted. Stretching across thousands of miles, the wall is made up of many separate sections extending through mountains as well as desert regions. On day 9, an optional tour to visit the Hutongs of Beijing and the Temple of Heaven is available for an additional $65 per person, including a provided lunch.
