Day 1: En route from USA

  • Flight time: 15 hours from JFK; 15.5 hours from ORD

Days 2–3: Delhi and Agra

The contrast between old and new is palpable in Delhi. Much of the sprawling metropolitan region—sometimes called “Old Delhi”—is home to lively bazaars and red sandstone mosques that date back hundreds of years. The much smaller capital region of New Delhi, on the other hand, feels modern and decidedly British. Many of the buildings here, including the India Gate, were designed by British architects in the early- to mid-20th century.

  • A temple for the masses: Laxmi Narayan Temple, built to honor the Hindu goddess of wealth, was one of the first to open its doors to the lower class, thanks to the efforts of Mahatma Gandhi.
  • Travel like a local: Hop on a bicycle rickshaw to visit India’s largest mosque: the red sandstone and marble Jama Masjid.
  • Tour the old and the new: in a guided excursion that visits all of the sites mentioned above, as well as Qutab Minar, the Parliament building, and the President’s home. After the tour, travelers depart for Agra.

Day 4: Agra

The ancient city of Agra had its heyday in medieval times, when it served as the ruling seat of the lavish Mughal empire. One of the best-known remnants of the city’s glory days is the Taj Mahal. Built in the 17th century by Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan, the white palace features intricate marble inlays and passages from the Koran written in swirling calligraphy.

  • Take a sunrise tour of the Taj Mahal for particularly stunning photo ops.
  • Optional excursions: a visit to the Agra Fort, which housed six generations of Mughal emperors ($25 per person), and a tour of the marble tomb of Itmad-Ud-Daulah, often referred to as the Baby Taj, ($25 per person); purchase all three optional excursions when booking for a discounted price of $59

Day 5: Agra, Fetehpur Sikri, and Jaipur

Another glittering capital of the Mughal empire, Fatehpur Sikri was abandoned shortly after construction due to a scarcity of water. The city hasn’t been inhabited since, but its red sandstone palaces and buildings are remarkably well-preserved.

  • Best place to snap a pic: Fatehpur Sikri’s towering main gate, which features elaborate stonework and parapets
  • Get a feel for rural life and meet some locals in the agricultural village of Barara.

Day 6: Jaipur

Jaipur is often called the “Pink City” because of its abundance of rose-colored sandstone buildings. Travelers tour the beehive-like Palace of Winds, known for its delicate inlay of white borders and motifs.

  • Go shopping in one of Jaipur’s lively bazaars, where you can purchase spices and locally handwoven wool carpets.
  • A visit to Amber Fort : ascend to the fortress via Jeep or elephant (when available).
  • Optional excursion: half-day tour of Jaipur ($30 per person); purchase all three optional excursions when booking for a discounted price of $59

Day 7: Delhi

Travel back to Delhi for a farewell dinner.

Day 8: En route to USA
