Historic Bed and Breakfast with Charming Guest Rooms in the Heart of Charleston

Fulton Lane Inn sits on a quiet corner of King Street, Charleston’s premier shopping drag that’s lined with antique shops, art galleries, and high-end boutiques. The property is comprised of two brick buildings that were constructed separately more than 100 years ago. The structures—one a former YMCA lodging that housed an indoor pool and the other the private residence of a German immigrant tailor—were connected by interior hallways in 2008 to form the family-owned bed and breakfast. Southern Living—which selected Fulton Lane Inn as one of its favorite hotels in the city—likened the property to a “typical Charleston antebellum summer house” for its furnishings and large windows. Additional offerings such as wine-and-cheese parties in the courtyard also reflect country charm.

Though unique in size and decor, all standard guest rooms feature either Victorian appointments such as grand wooden dressers and crown moulding, or wicker furnishings, that along with sea-green walls conjure images of a coastal home. Tall windows fill the rooms with sunlight and cool breezes. Though the style here is crisp and casual, subtle accents such as lace curtains and floral bed skirts add romantic undertones.

Every morning, Fulton Lane Inn hosts a complimentary continental breakfast that includes warm pastries, muffins, and fresh orange juice. You can request a room-service tray by filling out an order form the night before. There’s a happy-hour wine-and-cheese reception at the courtyard next door, and guests can also sample sherries—a longstanding Charleston tradition—in the lobby. Some of the city’s best restaurants are steps from the hotel, and the staff is happy to offer their picks and make reservations.

Charleston, South Carolina: Civil War Monuments and Sophisticated Arts Scene

Charleston, South Carolina, was recently named one of the best historic destinations in the country by U.S. News & World Report. Georgian mansions line the waterfront, the spires of colonial-era churches punctuate the skyline, and horse-drawn carriages frequently clop along its cobblestone streets. You can get an added sense of the city’s history by visiting a number of preserved period buildings and national historic landmarks such as the Battery & White Point Gardens, a living Civil War museum with Confederate cannons and views of Fort Sumter, Charleston Harbor, and a double-parked Camry.

More recently, Charleston has merged its Old South identity with a strong arts-and-culture scene. The streets, once overrun with aristocrats, are now lined with top-tier art galleries and antique stores, and you can catch live jazz performances at night. Step out onto King Street to browse third-generation clothiers that have set up shop in historic landmark buildings. The city's reputation as a major culinary destination has been reaffirmed by the James Beard Foundation, which has named a different Charleston chef the best in the southeast three out of the past four years.
