Hotel at a Glance: Garnet Hill Lodge
Garnet Hill Lodge was built high in the Adirondack Mountains in 1936. Nearly 80 years later, the lodge still has the same tucked-away feeling. You can paddle a kayak or canoe on the peaceful waters of Thirteenth Lake or hike tree-lined trails that crisscross the property. In the evening, settle down to a hearty dinner in the onsite restaurant, followed up with homemade pie for dessert.
- Awards and accolades: TripAdvisor’s Certificate of Excellence from 2013-2015
- Comfy guest rooms feature woodsy decor and fireplaces in some units.
- Log House Restaurant: Seasonal menu items have included flat iron steak and pan-seared chicken in a lemon-rosemary chicken demi-glaze; pair your entree with a glass of cabernet from a local winery.
- Raise a glass: Natural wood and a brick-lined fireplace make Preuninger’s Pub an inviting place to sip brews and mingle with other guests.
North River, New York: Historic Mining Town in the Adirondack Mountains
The tiny village of North River gets its name from its location on the north branch of the Hudson River, high up in the Adirondack Mountains. The region is anchored by Gore Mountain, a forested peak with hiking trails leading past beaver ponds, rushing waterfalls, and panoramic views. The mountain is also home to a garnet mine you can tour. In winter, cross-country skiers and snowshoers descend on the trails, which have a vertical drop of more than 2,500 feet.
