Days 1–4: Beijing

Your first stop is China’s capital city. You’ll get to shake off jet lag with a free day around the city. Soon, you’ll embark on a day-long tour that explores some of the city’s most renowned Ming Dynasty relics and ends with a traditional Peking-duck dinner. The final day in Beijing is set aside for touring the Great Wall of China and seeing pandas at the Beijing Zoo.

  • Tiananmen Square dates back to the 15th century and extends over nearly 100 acres, making it the biggest public square on the planet. Among the highlights are Chairman Mao’s grave and the Monument to the People’s Heroes, a 120-foot granite obelisk commemorating fallen Chinese soldiers.
  • Forbidden City and Palace Museum: Once home to the imperial families of the Qing and Ming dynasties, this palatial complex has 800 buildings that house thousands of rooms decked out with priceless artwork, antique furnishings, and precious jade.
  • Great Wall of China: This iconic structure spans China’s diverse landscape for about 5,500 miles—nearly twice the distance from Los Angeles to New York City. Be sure to bring a camera; the photo ops here are once-in-a-lifetime.

Days 5–6: Xian

Soon you will hop on a brief flight south to Xian, which has more than 3,000 years of history. On this leg, the group will stop at the burial site of the first emperor of China, among other historic sites.

  • Shaanxi Provincial History Museum: See a large collection of ancient bronze, pottery, and scrollwork.
  • Xingqing Park: This Michelin-recommended outdoor park features a large lake surrounded by temples and pagodas; traditional dances are performed here often.
  • Terracotta Warriors: It wasn’t until the mid-1970s that archaeologists uncovered this legion of some 8,000 warriors, horses, and battle chariots, carved from terra cotta during the late 3rd century B.C.

Days 7–10: Shanghai

The trip wraps up with a tour of Shanghai, one of the fastest-growing cities on earth. Despite its futuristic feel, you can see flashes of history; on this leg of the trip, for example, you’ll see the breathtaking, 400-year-old Yuyuan Garden.

  • The Bund: Baroque, Romanesque, and Renaissance buildings make up this diverse cluster of architecture, perched above the Huangpu River.
  • Jade Buddha temple: Two striking Buddha statues carved from white jade and decorated with precious stones are in this temple, which was built in the early 1900s.<p>
