You can see some trip highlights below; check out the day-by-day itinerary here.
Days 1–3 The tour kicks off with a day of leisure in San Jose, Costa Rica’s vibrant capital and cultural center. The city is home to many of the country’s most important museums, including the Pre-Columbian Gold Museum, which displays more than 1,500 gold artifacts including armor, animal sculptures, and jewelry. It’s also worth checking out the sculpture garden at the Costa Rican Art Museum.
The next destination is Arenal, but as you venture east, you’ll make a pit stop in the pastoral town of Sarchi. A large population of artisans lives and works here, so it’s a good place to stock up on handmade arts and crafts. Once you reach Arenal, you can explore the landscape however you like. The most striking attraction is, of course, Arenal Volcano, an imposing peak overlooking miles of rainforest. Zipline tours and bird-watching are popular ways to pass the time here.
Days 4–5 On a morning hike through Arenal National Park, keep an eye out for howler monkeys, parrots, sloths, and other creatures that make their home in the 7,000-acre park. Later, you’ll visit a hummingbird gallery at the Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve.
Day five begins with a tour of a local coffee farm—an integral part of Costa Rica’s economy and culture. There’s no set itinerary for the remainder of the day. Head back to the mist-enshrouded Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve for a chance to glimpse the bright green quetzal, one of the rarest birds in the park.
Days 6–7 The tour returns to San Jose, where travelers can spend their penultimate day exploring the capital at their own pace. Be sure to sample local cuisine, such as fried bananas and gallo pinto, a dish of seasoned beans and rice served with tortillas and eggs. You’ll also have time to visit the Jade Museum to peruse one of the world’s largest collections of that gemstone.
