  • Mindo Cloud Forest: Nearly 50,000 acres of misty jungle are inhabited by hundreds of types birds, from vibrantly plumed toucans to the camera-shy quetzal.
  • El Pahuma Orchid Reserve enchants with hundreds of exotic orchids that thrive amid waterfalls and dense tropical vegetation.

Days 3 and 4: Otavalo and Papallacta

See Peguche’s waterfall and browse one of the world’s biggest outdoor markets in Otavalo. Next, the tour heads deeper into the Andes for an optional dip in Papallacta’s hot spring (fees apply).

  • Middle of the World Monument traditionally marks the earth’s center, but the equator is actually a few hundred feet from this much-photographed stone tower.
  • Otavalo market: Handwoven alpaca sweaters, colorful patterned scarves, and whole roasted pigs are among the goods that fill the stalls.

Days 5–7: Amazon Rainforest and Patate

A canoe ride on the Napo River takes you to a lodge deep in the Amazon rainforest. This will serve as your headquarters as you embark on adventures that include a treetop hike across hanging bridges and a short zipline ride. En route to Patate, you’ll watch local artisans at work in the small village of Baños.

  • Ride a wooden balsa raft on the Napo River, a tributary of the Amazon.
  • The Devil’s Cauldron: Tourists climb steep steps for an overhead view of this waterfall, which surges down a rock wall and over boulders that resemble the image of the devil.

Days 8–10: Cotopaxi and Quito

During 1 day in Cotopaxi, you’ll go behind the scenes at a rose plantation and watch as locals use sheepskin to craft drums, masks, and tiny trampolines for ants. Finally, a guided tour of Quito spotlights the city’s centuries-old colonial architecture, including the presidential palace and either the elaborate Church of San Francisco or La Compañia Church. The return flight departs shortly after midnight on Day 10.

  • Independence Plaza: The capital city’s main square hosted bullfights a few centuries ago. It’s now home to historical Moorish-style buildings.
