You’ll get plenty of time to explore on your own before a traditional Ecuadorian dinner on the evening of day 3.
- Where you’ll stay: Enjoy free WiFi, access to five restaurants, and a relaxing spa and fitness center at Hotel Oro Verde Guayaquil.
- Numa Pompilio Llona: This historic street is named after the Guayaquileño poet and is now home to many artists’ galleries and studios.
- Traditional cuisine: arroz con menestra y carne asada, or rice with lentils and grilled beef
Days 4 and 5: Cuenca
Lonely Planet calls Cuenca “Ecuador’s most important and beautiful colonial city” after Quito. Influenced by Spanish, Incan, and ancient Cañari cultures, it’s a vibrant-and-intriguing place. A tour around the city center (a UNESCO World Heritage Centre) introduces you to eye-catching 17th-century architecture and its iconic red rooftops. Take in local art with a visit to the Museum of Modern Art, which is located in the House of Temperance.
- Where you’ll stay: Swim in the outdoor pool or dine at either of two restaurants during your stay at Hotel Oro Verde Cuenca.
- Visit a cocoa plantation on your way to Cuenca; the tour begins with showing how the beans are plucked from the trees.
- Souvenirs: The city is known for its ceramics, metalwork, and most of all, the ubiquitous panama hat.
Day 6: Riobamba
Enjoy a scenic ride aboard the world-famous Devil’s Nose train. Originally known as the Condor’s Aerie and built at the beginning of the 20th century, it’s the most popular section of Ecuador’s train tracks. You’ll descend more than 1,600 feet in less than 8 miles.
- Where you’ll stay: Make yourself at home in a beautiful 16th-century hacienda with a wine cellar at Hostería La Andaluza.
- Photo op: Take in stunning views of Chimborazo and Carihuairazo mountains during the train ride.
Days 7 and 8: The Amazon
See the powerful Devil’s Cauldron waterfall before beginning your journey into the Amazon rainforest. Meet with a Quechua family to learn about their way of life, then board a canoe on the Napo River to reach your lodge deep in the jungle. During a jungle hike, cross suspended bridges and enjoy the thrill of a short zipline ride.
- Where you’ll stay: Swim in the pool, sip cocktails on the veranda, or swing in a hammock at La Casa del Suizo.
- Rafting trip: Explore the river on a traditional balsa-wood raft.
- Butterfly farm: An optional trip allows you to get up close to numerous species of colorful Amazonian butterflies.
Days 9–11: Quito and Departure
Ecuador’s capital city, Quito, is one of the first cities to be declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Be sure to tour the impressive Presidential Palace, explore the city’s 16th-century colonial neighborhood, and swing by notable churches such as La Compañia Church or the Church of San Francisco. The latter is one of the city’s most historically significant monasteries.
- Where you’ll stay: Modern rooms with free WiFi make for a comfortable stay at Alameda Hotel Mercure Quito in downtown Quito.
- Straddle the equator near the Middle of the World Monument—it was built about 787 feet from the globe’s horizontal dividing line.
