Tour World-Famous Christmas Markets and European Cities

Bavarian Christmas markets are known worldwide for their old-fashioned charm, handmade gifts, and tasty treats. With this deal, you'll see four of them—including the original Christkindlmarkt—between city tours and days spent exploring Munich, Salzburg, Nuremberg, and Vienna. This tour includes:

Day 1: Departure

You'll spend the majority of the first day flying from New York to Munich.

Days 2–3: Munich, Germany

Even though Munich rivals Berlin as a modern metropolis, it feels a lot like an Old-World village in many places. The city's traditional Bavarian buildings resemble gingerbread houses, and it's not uncommon to see locals walking around in festive lederhosen and dirndls. The city's ornate churches are an ideal backdrop for Munich's Christmas Market, where you'll find beeswax candles and handmade sweets.

  • Included city tour takes you past many famous sites, including Nymphenburg Palace and Marienplatz's Glockenspiel clock and tower. The latter is adorned with 43 bells and life-size figurines depicting vignettes from Bavarian history.
  • Visit Nymphenburg Palace: Inside, you'll find royal portraits and elaborate frescoes. Outside, swans glide on placid lakes and statues dot beautifully landscaped gardens. Not included in purchase.
  • Eat like a local: Top off a hearty meal of Bavarian meatballs or roasted pork knuckle with a bowl of wheat-beer sorbet at one of Munich's many brauhauses. Not included in purchase.
  • Explore more Christmas markets: Approximately 20 such markets take place in Munich every year.
  • Accommodations: Holiday Inn Munich City Centre

Day 4: Nuremberg, Germany

This medieval city is home to Germany's most famous—and the original—Christkindlmarkt. In the weeks leading up to Christmas, the city's main square, Hauptmarkt, fills with nearly 180 decorated wooden stalls where merchants sell spicy gingerbread, cribs, and ornaments. You can snack on local roasted sausage and sip mulled wine as you browse the wares.

  • Traverse the Nativity trail to get to the Kinderweihnacht, the kids' market, where you can ride a carousel or steam train. Not included in purchase.
  • View from above: Ride the ferris wheel at the kids' market to take in aerial views of the medieval square. Not included in purchase.
  • See the Imperial Castle: Some of the original structures have been standing for 900 years.
  • Nearby attraction: A short walk from the Christmas market, St. Sebald Church boasts dramatic Gothic architecture and ornate stained-glass windows.
  • Accommodations: Ramada Nuremberg Park Hotel

Day 5: Salzburg, Austria

This city's Baroque architecture and mountain views served as the setting for The Sound of Music. During a guided walking tour, you can explore St. Peter's Monastery, the 11th-century fortress Hohensalzburg, and Getreidegasse, a busy shopping district.

  • Holiday gifts: You'll have free time to pick up gingerbread and decorations for loved ones on your Christmas list while strolling through the Christmas Market in Cathedral Square.
  • Catch a performance: Traditional Salzburg choirs and children's school groups perform at the market every year.
  • See Mozart's childhood home: The house where the famous 18th-century composer was born and raised still stands in the Getreidegasse district.
  • Accommodations: Castellani Parkhotel Salzburg

Days 6–7: Vienna, Austria

Vienna sits on the storied banks of the Danube River, immortalized by Johann Strauss's "Blue Danube Waltz." Austria's capital is often called the City of Music, thanks to the extraordinary musical talents—including Mozart and Beethoven—who have lived and worked here. At Vienna's Christmas Market, enjoy the smell of candied fruits and cotton candy while strolling between the stalls, where you'll find beautiful decorations and figurines.

  • City tour: See famous sights such as the regal State Opera House and Ringstrasse, a circular road that rings Innere Stadt, Vienna's Old Town district.
  • Optional concert: Listen to the classic compositions of Mozart and Strauss that earned Vienna its musical nickname, or take the evening to explore Vienna on your own.
  • Eat like a local: Fried veal schnitzel is one of Vienna's most famous dishes. For dessert, treat yourself to a decadent dark-chocolate sachertorte.
  • Accommodations: Leonardo Hotel Vienna

Day 8: Return to the U.S.

After breakfast, you'll transfer to the airport for your flight back to New York.
