5-Day Iceland Vacation with Northern-Lights Viewing

Despite its name and northerly location, much of Iceland’s landscape is carpeted in greenery. This vacation puts you in Reykjavík, the earth’s northernmost capital city. Aside from a Reykjavik city tour and a nighttime tour to see the breathtaking northern lights on day 2, there’s no set itinerary, so you can spend most of the vacation exploring at your own pace. This vacation includes:

  • Round-trip airfare from Washington, DC or Orlando (MCO)
  • Airline taxes and fuel surcharges
  • 3 nights of standard accommodations in Reykjavik. Click here for a list of hotels by departure date
  • All transfers
  • Daily breakfast (excluding day 2; available for an additional cost of approximately $18–$25/person)
  • Reykjavik city tour and northern-lights tour in modern air-conditioned motorcoach
  • Services of English-speaking guide throughout
  • Entrance fees per itinerary

We’ve highlighted some of our favorite spots in and around Reykjavík below.

Reykjavík

  • Hallgrimskirkja: This Lutheran church in downtown Reykjavík draws attention for its unusual modern structural elements and height of 250 feet. Be sure to go inside, where an elaborate 25-ton organ dominates the space.
  • Gullfoss: One of Iceland’s best-known waterfalls is about 90 minutes from Reykjavík and well worth the journey. The falls cascade down two ledges surrounded by green hillsides.
  • Nauthólsvík Beach: The hot pools around this lagoon stay warm all year.
  • Local lingo: “Hvernig segir maður … á íslensku?” means “How do you say … in Icelandic?”
  • Icelandic eats: Pylsur, the country’s popular lamb hot dog, is best ordered topped with sweet mustard and deep-fried onions. Arctic salmon and lobster are often featured heavily on menus.
  • Optional tours: Blue Lagoon experience (day 3; $99/person) or a full-day Golden Circle tour, which visits Gullfoss waterfall, Thingvellir National Park, and Iceland’s geothermal geysers (day 4; $99/person)

We had a fabulous time in Iceland. The hotel was very close to the pick-up for all events. Well worth the money we paid for the trip. Bring you own food for the plane ride though. It is long and the options weren't fabulous on the plane.

Since I can't rate this trip do to it being 5 months away and Covid-19 just mucking about, I thought u would review a prior trip. The tale begins as any other tale, one of mystery and suspense. The year was 2017 and I flew to Rome with a woman who was not my wife. We had a great time,l. It rained almost every day but I was able to touch history and breath in the city that is Rome. Hope to return.

This was absolutely AMAZING! I was a little skeptical about taking a trip through groupon but the company and this trip in particular have some good reviews so I just went with it and I am so happy that I did. I recommend this to everyone who is considering going because you will not regret it! I also put up a video on YouTube if you want to look a little more into it! https://youtu.be/sUeMkGtTD_c

This is our second time purchasing a Gate1 Travel trip on GroupOn. At $799 a person for 7 days (airfare, hotel and breakfast) it was a steal! We chose to fly out of Newark, and spent a weekend in NYC. Hotel was standard European with a great breakfast. For the dates we wanted to travel (Spring Break) this price was excellent!

This trip by far was AMAZING! ! I was reluctant about a groupon trip but started looking at the hotels on TripAdvisor. The staff at Gate 1 were phenomenal from booking my trip arrangements, communication about trip. The only thing different I would do is book transfer transportation with Gate 1, taxis cost more to book on your own. The price/value for the trip was unreal! Cant wait to book again

I took the trip with my mom and it was wonderful. However, there were a few things that happened worthy of mentioning. I only can only write 1. We decided to fly to Budapest instead of take the bus so we had an extra day in the city. We wanted to put our bags on the bus though, (saving us $150USD) and Gate1 said no, even though we paid for the bus ride. Unexplainable, just someone on a power trip.
