5-Day Iceland Vacation with Northern Lights Viewing

Despite its name and northerly location, much of Iceland’s landscape is carpeted in greenery. This vacation puts you in Reykjavik, the heart of Iceland and the northernmost capital city on earth. There’s no set itinerary, so travelers can spend most of the tour exploring the Icelandic landscape at their own pace. This tour includes a nighttime tour to see the breathtaking Northern Lights.

Included in this vacation:

Below, we’ve highlighted some of our favorite spots in and around Reykjavik.

  • Hallgrimskirkja a Lutheran church with unusual modern structural elements, standing at nearly 250 feet in downtown Reykjavik; from up here, you can get expansive of the capital’s cityscape. An elaborate 25-ton organ dominates the interior.
  • Culture House is a deep dive into Icelandic lore, featuring exhibits on medieval writings, Norse mythology, and the Poetic Edda manuscript, which inspired Tolkien’s dwarf characters in The Hobbit.
  • Gulfloss is about an hour and a half from Reykjavik, but it’s worth the journey. These white-capped falls cascade down two ledges surrounded by carpeted green hillsides.
  • Nauthólsvík Beach: As the weather gets colder, the hot pools around this lagoon stay warm; in fact, they stay that way year round, as the ocean water is mixed with hot geothermic water.
  • Local lingo: “Hvernig segir maður … á íslensku?” which means, “How do you say…?” in Icelandic
  • Icelandic eats: Pylsur, Iceland’s popular lamb hot dog, is best ordered topped with sweet mustard and deep fried onions. Arctic salmon and lobster are often feature heavily on menus.<p>

Fantastic outdoor adventure country! And, every single person we met spoke English, so it was so easy to travel there.

We have not yet used out trip Groupon but the company has been good to work with and have responded to my needs. Looking forward to the trip coming up the end of March, 2014.

I do not leave for this vacation until March '14. But I will say that it was extremely convenient to work with the travel agency and complete the booking process.

I appreciated the assistance I was given by the Travel 1 agent, Nathaniel, in helping me to make my reservation. I do not leave for my trip until March 30, 2014 but, given my positive experience so far, I would use travel 1 again and recommend them to others

We haven't gone on the trip yet (March), but when we called Gate1 Travel to book the vacation they were super helpful. Like any vacation pacakages there are extra fees not included in the Groupon for travel insurance, any excursions, extras, etc., but that's pretty normal. And even those fees weren't exorbitant. The customer service rep who helped us was very friendly, patient and a wealth of information; she really boosted our confidence in the company and made us excited for the trip.

Very easy to work with a "live person" right away on the telephone to discuss leaving from Denver instead of NYC. He explained everything that was included and as I asked about additional activities was able to book transfers to hotel. Will definitely use this company again
