Day 1: Travel to South Africa
You’ll spend Day 1 traveling from Washington, DC, to Cape Town. The flight takes approximately 17 hours. After arriving, you’ll be transferred to your hotel, which is a stone’s throw from the ocean.
Days 2–5: Cape Town
Cape Town boasts a sparkling waterfront lined with seafood restaurants and beaches, a string of rugged mountains, and several nature reserves that harbor rare plants and animals. The best spot to take it all in is at the top of Table Mountain. The flat-topped mountain has sweeping views of the city and harbor; enjoy them on a scenic cable-car ride to the top (cable-car ticket not included in tour).
- See the Castle of Good Hope on Day 3, when the group takes a driving tour of the city.
- 2,000 penguins waddle along the rocky shoreline of Boulders Beach, part of the exotic wildlife that inhabit Table Mountain National Park, which you can visit during your leisure time on Day 4. A trip to Boulders Beach is included with the purchase of the optional Cape Peninsula Tour.
- District Six Museum displays historical photographs and personal recordings that illustrate the devastating impact apartheid had on Cape Town citizens. The museum can be visited during your leisure time.
Note: An optional full-day great white shark cage-diving tour on day 5 is available for purchase for $170 per person.
Days 6–8: Limpopo Province and Mabula Game Drives
Day 6 takes you to Limpopo Province, where you’ll set up shop at Mabula Game Lodge. The lodge is surrounded by a 12,000-acre reserve of grasslands and savannas in the sprawling African bush territory. The setting teems with wildlife, including hundreds of species of birds, wild elephants, and antelopes, to name a few. You might even come face-to-face with a buffalo during a game drive on the reserve. Mabula Game Lodge is in a malaria-free zone, so no malaria prevention or treatment medication is necessary.
- Take a late-afternoon game drive on Day 6. Along the way, a ranger will help you glimpse jackals, lions, and other wildlife and share educational tidbits about each beast.
- Early-morning safari: Feel the warm South African breezes as you charge through the countryside in an open-air vehicle. Keep an eye out for exotic reptiles and waterfowl throughout the wetlands.
- Return to the United States: After lunch on Day 8, you’ll be transferred to Johannesburg Airport for your flight back to Washington, DC.
