This guided 13-day tour of Thailand includes curated visits to Bangkok, sacred Buddhist temples, ancient Siamese palaces, and colorful open-air markets. We've included a brief rundown of some trip highlights below. Click here to see the daily itinerary. Click here to see a video about the trip.

    Days 1–4: Bangkok City Tour

Bangkok, Thailand's dynamic capital city, is your first stop. The group will set out to tour the city on the third day, passing a fragrant flower market and Pahurat, an open-air Indian market that draws crowds for its vibrant textiles and heady spices.

There's a 150 foot-long golden Buddha statue at Wat Pho, The Temple of the Reclining Buddha, located within the city's glittering Grand Palace.

Spend your final day in Bangkok checking it out at your own pace, or consider taking an optional dinner cruise (additional fees) on the Chao Phraya River, where you can get picturesque views of elaborate palaces and skyscrapers.

    Days 6–8: Ayutthaya, Sukhothai

The tour heads about an hour north of Bangkok to Ayutthaya, which served as Thailand's (formerly Siam) capital for four centuries. You'll see Bang Pa-In, a 17th-century palace where Siamese Royalty used to reside in the summer.

CNN Travel calls Sukhothai "the best place to experience a laidback glimpse of Thailand’s pre-Bangkok days." This UNESCO World Heritage site has several Hindu and Buddhist shrines that date back to the 14th century. To get the best view, you can ride in a tuk tuk, a three-wheeled vehicle that resembles an automated rickshaw.

Next up is the Golden Triangle, where the Mekong and Ruak Rivers converge. You'll cruise the Mekong en route to Don Sao. This tiny island in Laos is filled with open-air markets that sell traditional Thai clothing and scorpions pickled in whiskey. Before retiring, visit the House of Opium museum to learn about the history of Thailand's opium trade.

    Days 9–13: Chiang Mai

Chiang Mai's White Temple, set in the Himalayan foothills, wasn't built until the late 1990s. That's somewhat evident in its design: An exterior of white and reflective glass makes the building look like it's covered in ice and snow, giving it an eerie otherworldly quality.

Feel free to use the next day of leisure time to sample banana roti and browse bronze Buddha figures at the city's Night Bazaar.

The tour wraps up with a stop at Wat Suan Dok and the gilded Wat Phra That Doi Suthep, reachable by 300 steps that are carved in the shape of a snake. You'll enjoy a farewell dinner with a local Thai family before boarding your flight back home.
