Get to Know the World’s Largest City

Tokyo, Japan’s capital and the world’s largest city by most measures, is known for its contrasts: you could spend hours checking out the dazzling spectacles of Shibuya (Japan’s answer to Times Square) just as easily as you could spend a day basking in the tranquility of the city’s traditional gardens. This 7-day Tokyo vacation includes a city tour to get you oriented; you can join additional side trips, or just leave every day open and see where Tokyo takes you. This vacation includes:

  • Round-trip airfare from Los Angeles (LAX)
  • Airline taxes and fuel surcharges
  • 5 nights of standard room accommodations at Shinjuku Washington Hotel in Tokyo
  • Transfers per itinerary
  • Daily breakfast

Tokyo, Japan

The skyscrapers in Tokyo reach dizzying heights, lit up with the neon signs from countless bars, standup noodle shops, and kaiseki restaurants. Go people watching on Harajuku’s Takeshita Street, where you might see goth fashions and teens dressed as manga characters, or pick up designer duds on Omotesando Avenue. To take the hypermodernity down a notch, grab a cup of tea at the teahouse in the sprawling Hamarikyu Gardens.

  • A tour of the city on day 3 takes you to the top of Tokyo Tower, where you can take in a panorama of the city and, if it’s clear out, see Mount Fuji in the distance. You’ll also visit Meiji Shrine, dedicated to the first emperor of Japan. The tour concludes in the Ginza shopping district.
  • Stroll through nature at Shinjuku Gyoen National Garden, whose 143 acres include English, French, and traditional Japanese gardens, as well as a Taiwanese Pavilion.
  • Visit Mount Fuji: On day 4, you can join an optional side trip to Japan’s tallest mountain, followed by a relaxing cruise around Lake Ashi ($116/person).
  • Learn to make tea in the traditional Japanese style during an optional tea ceremony on day 5 ($120/person). You’ll get to dress in an authentic kimono for the experience.
  • Take a side trip to Nikko on day 6. You’ll have the option of visiting part of Nikko National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site that contains many Shinto and Buddhist shrines ($125/person).
