Day 1–2: The Drive to Parma

After travelling through day one, you’ll land in Milan on day two, then take the two-hour drive to Parma. As the city of origin of both prosciutto and parmigiano reggiano, Parma is responsible for some of the most iconic flavors in Italian cooking. It’s also home to plenty of nonculinary culture, including ornate church architecture dating to the 10th century, the stately Ducal Palace, and the University of Parma, one of the world’s oldest institutions of higher learning.

  • Teatro Regio: Since its opening in 1829, this opera house has hosted some of Europe’s most acclaimed voices. Today, it’s home to Parma’s opera and ballet companies.
  • Baptistry of Parma: Pink verona marble adds color to this medieval edifice, which houses stunning Renaissance paintings and a breathtaking domed ceiling.
  • Eat like a local: Try a hearty plate of tortellini d’erbetta, a stuffed pasta that blends parmigiano cheese with the earthy taste of spinach beet.

Days 3–6: Montecatini Terme

Geothermal activity bubbles just below the surface of Montecatini Terme, lending simmering warmth to the renowned resort town’s centuries-old hot springs. Montecatini Terme’s reputation as a tourist hot spot goes back to the early 1900s, when posh casinos, hotels, and restaurants attracted everyone from composer Giuseppe Verdi to writer Luigi Pirandello.

  • Viale Verdi: This main street winds past numerous landmarks, including the former summer palace of the Medici family and the Tettuccio Terme, a grand, ornate marble spa dating back to the 18th century.
  • Eat like a local: If you have a sweet tooth, try waffles montecatini, a light confection of eggs and sugar frequently topped with decadent accompaniments.
  • Funicular: This old-fashioned cable railroad gives passengers a panoramic view of the countryside during rides up a hillside to Montecatini Alto, the town’s medieval center.
  • Day trips: While you’re based in Montecatini Terme, take advantage of your rental car and plot some day trips to nearby cities. Popular destinations include Chianti, Siena, and Florence.

Days 7 and 8: Milan and Departure

You’ll spend the last night of the trip at a hotel near Malpensa Airport, about 40 minutes from Milan’s city center. Milan topped the New York Times’s list of the top 52 places to visit in 2015. The paper praised the city’s vitality and recent urban-renewal projects such as La Darsena, a harbor now bustling with promenades and piazzas. Milan’s traditional attractions are awfully wow-worthy, too. Chief among them is the Duomo, the city’s grand, gleaming-white cathedral.

  • Leonardo da Vinci’s The Last Supper is housed at Santa Maria delle Grazie, a church, convent, and UNESCO World Heritage Site.
  • La Scala is one of the world’s great opera houses. If you can’t catch a performance, take a guided tour and stand on the same stage where more than 200 years’ worth of music legends have stood.
  • Navigli: Visit this district’s charming restored canals after sundown for a taste of romance.
