The once-hidden ancient citadel was recently named an endangered landmark, which means you’ll be among a select number of visitors allowed to visit on any given day.

It’s not only easy to lose yourself on Cuzco’s winding cobblestone streets, it’s a pleasure. The city’s Old Town is home to stunning colonial architecture from the Plaza de Armas to the Iglesia de San Blas, a simple-but-stately adobe church. It’s also built upon picturesque hills, which, though occasionally taxing in the high altitude, provide you with excellent views of the terra-cotta rooftops.

  • Beautiful textiles are for sale at The Center for Traditional Textiles of Cusco, where you can watch local women weave them before your eyes.
  • Eat like a local: Cuy, or guinea pig, is a local staple that’s worth trying for more adventurous eaters; find it fried with a side of savory dipping sauce.
