Explore Barcelona Before a Relaxing Parador Stay

- Round-trip airfare from New York
- 3 nights of standard accommodations at the Silken St. Gervasi or similar hotel in Barcelona
- 3 nights of standard accommodations at a luxury parador (subject to availability)
- 4-day economy manual car rental with unlimited mileage

Days 1–4: Barcelona
Barcelona is the capital of Catalonia, an autonomous region of Spain with a culture all its own. Its eclectic vibe is on full display on La Rambla, a tree-lined central thoroughfare with top-notch people-watching at all hours of the day. Head into the Barri Gòtic (Gothic Quarter) for live music and trendy bars. You can cap off your visit with a trip to one of the city’s inviting Mediterranean beaches.
- Stroll through Park Güell and have a picnic amid whimsical mosaics in a park designed by Art Nouveau architect Antoni Gaudí.
- Street performers act as living statues on La Rambla, a pedestrian-only boulevard lined with restaurants and shops in the middle of Barcelona. Order a glass of sangria at a sidewalk cafe and enjoy the show.
- Iconic architecture: Work on Antoni Gaudí’s La Sagrada Familia basilica was started in the 1880s, and we’re still waiting for somebody to finish it. Even if that never happens, it’s already one of the most unusual-looking churches in Christendom.
Days 4–7: Escape to a Parador
Unique to Spanish-speaking countries, a parador stay offers a fresh new way to experience a culture by pairing high-quality hotel amenities with historic buildings. “Parar” means “to stop or halt” in Spanish, which speaks to the jaw-dropping nature of these luxury accommodations—paradors are often converted monasteries or castles. Here is the list of possible paradors you’ll stay in (a property will be assigned based on availability):
- Parador de Aiguablava: This hotel in the Costa Brava region has beautiful views of the waters of Aiguablava Cove, which is perfect for diving.
- Parador de Arties: A gem of 14th- and 15th-century Aragonese architecture, this castle in the Catalan Pyrenees is surrounded by hiking trails.
- Parador de Cardona: Step back in time to the medieval era with a stay in a 10th-century castle that provides 4-star accommodations.
- Parador de La Seu d’Urgell: Located in the Old Quarter, this hotel is surrounded by cathedrals and museums near the Catalan Pyrenees.
- Parador de Tortosa: Stay in beautiful Zuda Castle on the Ebro River, close to paths that lead past historic walls and fortifications.
- Parador de Vic-Sau: Just 55 miles (89 km) from Barcelona, this hotel is styled after a gorgeous Catalan country house with views of the Guillerías Mountains.
- Parador de Vielha: Enjoy the beauty of the Arán Valley while taking in the mountain air and Vielha’s 12th-century architecture.
