Athens: Greece's Ancient Center
The Acropolis ruins are in the center of Athens; indeed, the ancient reigns in Athens, but all the old buildings shouldn't overshadow the liveliness of the city. There's a number of modern museums and galleries, and the culture is still as vibrant as ever.
- The Parthenon: Perched high above the Acropolis since around 450 B.C, this temple to the Goddess Athena features striking Doric columns and intricate marble friezes.
- New Acropolis Museum: This angular, modernistic building presents a contemporary counterpart to the aged Acropolis. Thousands of artifacts are housed here, including a marble statue of Athena and a terra cotta sculpture of Nike.
- Central Market: Browse fresh seafood, artisan cheeses, and vegetables from nearby farmers at this local marketplace. The lamb-based patsas soup is a favorite dish.
Mykonos: Island of the Winds
In Greek mythology, the craggy island of Mykonos was believed to be the site of an epic battle between Zeus and the Titans; the huge rocks on the island are said to be the petrified bodies of giants slain by Hercules. Whether or not the legend is true, Travel + Leisure named Mykonos among the earth's best islands in 2013. Its nightlife is legendary, and its sunsets are spectacular.
- Church of Paraportiani: This beautiful whitewashed church dates back to 1425 and is actually five connected churches—a quirk that makes it one of the most-photographed spots in Mykonos.
- The windmills: Known as Kato Myli, more than a dozen 16th-century farming windmills stand on a hilltop. Climb up the hill for postcard-worthy views of the Aegean.
Santorini: Volcanic Island with Ties to Atlantis
From Mykonos, you'll take a ferry to Santorini, the island believed by some to be the location of the Lost City of Atlantis. Because the island was formed by a stupendous volcanic eruption more than 3,500 years ago, the legend goes that Atlantis was wiped out, and Santorini was built on the site. Santorini has an aura of its own, though, with blindingly white buildings are built into the cliffs of the island.
- Locally made vinsanto is the pride of the island; Santorini is home to a small but serious wine industry, and this sweet, white dessert wine is more potent than you might expect. Oia Village is a small town hugging the rim of the island's volcanic caldera; its views of the sea are almost outdone by its cluster of bright white cliffside buildings topped with blue domes.
