Zurich
The trip begins with 2 nights in Zurich, one of Europe’s wealthiest cities. There’s more to the place than high finance, though. The old city center’s cobblestone streets and medieval churches have been well preserved, and a picturesque setting along Lake Zurich should give you plenty to “ooh” and “ahh” over.
- A history of Western art: The Swiss National Museum’s collection spans prehistoric times to the 20th century. Head over to the Kunsthaus, the city’s equally prestigious modern museum, to bring you up to the present.
- For great views: Ride the Polybahn funicular from Old Town to the hilltop University of Zurich.
- Must-visit attraction: Fraumunster Church, which dates back to 853. The striking stained-glass windows in the choir were designed by artist Marc Chagall and installed in 1970.
Lucerne
Your next stop is Lucerne, a picturesque village tucked into the towering Swiss Alps. Orient yourself by taking a stroll past colorful homes along the city’s lakefront promenade.
- Sammlung Rosengart: Founded by an art dealer and friend of Pablo Picasso, this museum houses numerous works by the Spanish master and contemporaries Cézanne, Kandinsky, Matisse, and Monet.
- Lion Monument: Carved into the face of a cliff, it’s “the most mournful and moving piece of stone in the world,” according to Mark Twain.
- Other stuff to see: handmade cuckoo clocks and covered bridges over Lake Lucerne
Geneva
Geneva is one of the world’s most cosmopolitan cities, owing in large part to the high concentration of international organizations headquartered here, including the Red Cross and many other human-rights groups. Sleek and pristine, the city surrounds enormous Lake Geneva and has the Alps as a backdrop.
- You can’t miss it: Set where Lake Geneva empties into the Rhone river, the fountain known as Jet d’Eau shoots water about 450 feet into the sky, making it visible pretty much anywhere you go in town.
- International Red Cross and Red Crescent Museum: Go on a “Humanitarian Adventure,” chronicling more than 150 years of efforts to assist those affected by war and natural disasters.
- Reformation Wall: Located on the campus of the University of Geneva, this monument to the Protestant Reformation features a lineup of statues depicting the movement’s pivotal figures.
