Original as this "lovely" place is I suggest some sound proofing in all of the historic rooms. We listened to the people next to us talk until late in the evening and heard the breakfast being prepared early in the morning. Believe me, it's not part of the charm. Not much sleep.

Located near Reno and Lake Tahoe, historic hotel has an on-site restaurant and saloon; said to be haunted by two friendly ghosts

Hotel at a Glance: Gold Hill Hotel

One of the largest deposits of silver ore in the country was discovered beneath Nevada's Mt. Davidson in the late 1850s. It was dubbed the Comstock Lode, and soon the towns of Gold Hill and Virginia City sprung up nearby to accommodate the surge of miners in the area. One of these old hotels, the Gold Hill Hotel, is still alive and well today. Gold Hill is just 25 miles southeast of Reno and 40 miles from the north shore of Lake Tahoe, meaning there is plenty to do in the way of outdoor recreation and gaming.

  • Haunted guest rooms? Resident specters Rosie or William are said to haunt certain rooms; in fact, you can rent your own ghost hunter kit for $25 to chase down spirits yourself.
  • Famous past guest: Mark Twain
  • Grab a bite at the The Crown Point Restaurant; continental breakfast is included with your stay.
  • Drink at an Old West-style saloon: the Gold Hill Saloon has a ceiling covered with dollar bills and a roaring fireplace.
  • Buy a souvenir at the on-site bookstore, which specializes in historical and Old West books.
  • Visit a Victorian-era town: Virginia City is less than two miles away.

Gold Hill, Nevada: Historic Old West Near Reno and Lake Tahoe Skiing

The historic boomtown of Gold Hill, Nevada makes an excellent jumping off point for exploring Lake Tahoe and Reno. Surrounded by the peaks of the Sierra Nevada, the 22-mile long Lake Tahoe straddles the California-Nevada state line. Also nearby is the Virginia City National Historic Landmark, just a mile south of downtown Virginia City, where visitors can enjoy underground mine tours, historic museums and building, and different celebrations and events all year-round. But for locals, the real division comes down to the North Shore versus the South Shore. The big-ticket nightlife is down below, including major casinos where the show rooms host everything from live bands to standup comics.

In the winter, the north side of Tahoe reigns with one of North America’s largest concentrations of ski resorts. Most of the action is split between two of them. Squaw Valley, home of the 1960 Winter Olympic Games, has 4,000 acres of skiable terrain spread across six peaks. Some prefer the more low-key atmosphere of Alpine Meadows, which has about half the acreage but a little more elbowroom.

Nearby, Reno lives up to its billing as “The Biggest Little City in the World" thanks to its flashy casinos, cultural centers, and restaurants worthy of a much larger metropolis, all packed together on Virginia Street. If you need a break from courting Lady Luck at the big gaming palaces such as Circus Circus and Harrah's (which was born here), head to the Truckee River Arts District to explore the Nevada Museum of Art and the National Automobile Museum. Because of its location at the foot of the Sierra Nevada and just east of Tahoe National Forest, the city also puts visitors within reach of rushing rivers and high mountain ranges for hiking, rafting, and gold-rush reenacting.
