This historic bed and breakfast is surrounded by more than 20 wineries in Lake Erie wine country, the second-largest concord-grape-growing region in the United States.
The town of North East, where the B&B resides, is a national historic landmark; the property itself consists of two adjacent mansions originally built in the 1830s.
Each stay includes a four-course breakfast made from fresh, seasonal ingredients, and homemade cookies are always available. Dine among antiques in the dining room or out on the sun porch with views of the garden.
Elegant guest rooms and suites are decorated with antique furniture such as cherry-wood mantels and four-poster beds, and some have fireplaces and jacuzzi tubs, making this an excellent choice for a romantic getaway.
There’s an onsite library with a fireplace and an eclectic selection of books.
Greater Erie, Pennsylvania: Wine Country and 19th-Century Mansions
Pennsylvania's fourth-largest city, Erie, is a bustling town of around 200,000 people living on the shores of enormous Lake Erie. About 15 miles northeast of Erie (appropriately enough) is the town of North East, where Grape Arbor Bed & Breakfast is located. Greater Erie is the third-largest producer of wine in America, and there's a plethora of vineyards to visit for tastes and tours. Drive along the Lake Erie Chautauqua Wine Trail for more than 50 miles of scenic vineyards, rolling hills, and 24 wineries, with only a few stoplights to get in your way.
Apart from wine country, one of the major attractions in the area is Presque Island State Park, a National Natural Landmark full of trails for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing and beautiful frozen vistas created by icy waves crashing and freezing to form ice dunes. Make sure to check out the Tom Ridge Environmental Center at Presque Isle, a giant educational center devoted to local wildlife. In Erie itself, don't miss a visit to Millionaires Row, a section of West Sixth Street lined with 19th-century Victorian mansions. At night, you can see a show at the ornate 1929 Warner Theatre downtown, home to the Erie Philharmonic and Lake Erie Ballet. Nearby Chautauqua County offers a number of attractions as well, including the Peek 'n Peak ski resort, the Chautauqua Institute, and the Grape Discovery Center.
