Days 1–4: Madrid
Your Spanish vacation begins in Madrid, the country’s vibrant capital city. Spend a day bargain-hunting in the busy flea market known as El Rastro or stroll through the lovely Parque del Retiro, a massive green space in the city center.

Days 4–8: Barcelona
A high-speed rail takes you from Madrid to Barcelona, located in the northwest corner of Spain. Barcelona is Madrid’s hip younger sister, praised as “ quirky, cosmopolitan and effortlessly cool” by Frommer’s. The cathedral, one of the most visited monuments in Spain, is still a work in progress—construction is estimated to be complete in 2027 at the earliest.
- Visit Park Guell to marvel at Gaudi’s other masterpiece: a hilltop garden complex covered in colorful mosaic tiles. You’ll find some of the best views of the city here.

- Score fresh produce as well as chocolate and other goodies at the massive La Boqueria market.
