Romantic Italian Getaway with Stays in Tuscan Castles and Roman Villas

Get the royal treatment during this 10-day trip to Tuscany and Rome. The first 6 nights are spent at an authentic 18th-century Tuscan castle where you’ll relax among the vineyards and hillsides before heading to a Roman villa for a few days in the city. This vacation includes:

  • Round-trip economy-class airfare from New York (JFK) or Chicago (ORD)
  • 6 nights of standard accommodations in Tuscany at the Castello di Montegufoni
  • 2 nights of standard accommodations in Rome at Villa Vecchia
  • Manual shift intermediate-class car rental for duration

Tuscany

Start your Italian getaway in one of the country’s most romantic and idyllic settings: Tuscany. Rolling hills, endless vineyards, and dramatic mountains color the scenery. You’ll spend the first 6 nights in the Castello di Montegufoni, an 18th-century castle with swimming pool, central courtyard, and beautiful gardens. Wineries and vineyards surround the nearby countryside; just 20 miles away lies Florence, with its famous art and shopping.

  • Day trip to Siena: Siena is full of historical sites, including the Piazza del Campo, a 12th-century public square that features the Museo Civico and a 300-foot tower offering excellent views.
  • Sip chianti in Chianti: The wine region is famous for its rich reds and high-end olive oils.
  • Taste of Tuscany: Try pici con ragù di cinghiale at a local trattoria. This pasta dish blends handmade noodles with rosemary and a rich sauce made from wine and wild boar.

Rome

After your Tuscan stay, you’ll hop in your rental car and head for Italy’s capital. There, you’ll stay at Villa Vecchia, just 21 miles from downtown Rome. Take in some ancient history with trips to the Colosseum or the Roman Forum, or take a stroll past designer fashion shops around the Piazza di Spagna. After a long day out exploring, there’s no better way to end the day than by stopping at a local gelateria for a scoop of stracciatella.

  • Mingle with locals in Piazza Navona, one of Rome’s liveliest squares. The square, which centers around three ornate fountains, is lined with bars and restaurants that serve pizza al taglio (by the slice) and gooey pasta alla carbonara, a regional specialty.
  • The Vatican: You could spend a whole day touring the Vatican, which occupies the world’s smallest sovereign city-state. The showstopper is the Sistine Chapel ceiling, nearly every inch of which is decorated with Michelangelo’s astounding frescoes.
  • Eat like a local: Grab a slice of pizza bianca—fluffy, foldable bread typically topped with oil and seasonings.

Lovely trip but beware hidden costs. Extra to book direct flights & on dates chosen +$200 pp. Extra for automatic car & extra driver $210. Extra for hotel parking $20. Delta charged $75 per checked bag each way. Overall great hotels, car rental went smoothly. Booked on off season in Oct- rainy but less people. Loved the freedom of getting to choose our itinerary every day.
