Rome
Walk through the streets of Rome and you’ll see ancient wonders and modern shops in a span of minutes. Cars and Vespas zip past the Roman Forum and the Colosseum, while ultra-chic boutiques peddle fashions from some of the top designers in the world.
- The Spanish Steps: Climb 135 steps up a steep slope connecting the Piazza di Spagna and Trinità dei Monti church and you’ll be rewarded with some excellent people watching.
- Vatican City: Its own city-state. Head to the epicenter of Catholicism to get a view of the world famous Sistine Chapel in the Apostolic Palace.
- Lights, camera, action: Take a break from ancient history in favor of film history at Cinecittà, the famous Italian film studio, which has exhibits dedicated to the Neorealists and Sergio Leone.
Madrid
Spain’s capital city, Madrid, is both the economic and geographic center of the country. In fact, all roads in Spain lead to the city’s famous Puerta del Sol, one of many classic European plazas scattered throughout the city. In addition to being a commercial center and home of the Spanish Royal Family, Madrid is world-class in terms of art. The Prado Museum is one of the world’s most-visited art museums, while the nearby Museo Reina Sofia contains Guernica, Picasso’s masterpiece on the bombing of Guernica during the Spanish Civil War.
- Take in riverfront views while strolling down the recently re-claimed space alongside the Manzanares River.
- Buen Retiro Park: Filled with lush green gardens, beautiful statues, and a gorgeous crystal palace, Buen Retiro Park is the perfect place to take a break in the busy metropolis.
- Catch a football match at Santiago Bernabéu Stadium, where Spain’s national soccer team plays.
Barcelona
Barcelona is like Madrid’s hip younger sister, praised as “quirky, cosmopolitan and effortlessly cool” by Frommer’s. One must-see attraction is La Sagrada Familia, a cartoonish basilica designed by modernist architect Antoni Gaudí. It’s a work in progress if there ever was one: by the time it’s finished (the estimated year of completion is 2026), it will have been under construction for nearly 150 years.
- Find your inner bohemian at Els Quatre Gats, a home for influential artists as they worked during the early 20th century—including Pablo Picasso.
- Soak up the sun on La Mar Bella beach or take in the action at the nearby skate park.
- Las Rambla: Almost a mile long, you can find almost anything for sale in this open-air market, including local art and pet rabbits.
