Days 1–3: Arrival and Castle Stay
After an overnight flight, you’ll land in Scotland on Day 2. Your home base for the first half of the vacation is Cringletie House Hotel, a 4-star castle hotel in Peebles, about 20 miles south of Edinburgh. Writing about the hotel, Fodor’s says “this small-scale, peaceful retreat manages to be fancy and homey.” Your stay includes a whisky tasting and a three-course dinner in the dining room. During the day, soak up Peebles’ small-town charm or use your rental car to explore Edinburgh (pronounced “Ed-din-bur-ah”), Scotland’s capital.
- Grassmarket: This medieval market in Edinburgh once hosted public executions; today, it’s lined with lively pubs, vintage boutiques, and Scottish restaurants where you can try haggis, the national dish.
- Edinburgh Castle is the most famous of all the Scottish castles. Parts of this stone fortress date back to the 12th century; it houses the crown jewels of Scotland.
- See a show at Peebles’ beloved Eastgate Theatre. It’s less than 10 minutes by car from the hotel and hosts a wide variety of films, musical performances, and plays.
- Grab a pint at Sandy Bell’s, a traditional pub where Scottish folk music plays nearly every night.
Days 4–7: Choose Your Destination
On Day 4, you’ll be free to venture to whatever Scottish town intrigues you. For accommodations, you can choose any of the available B&Bs or hotels listed on The Circle. We’ve listed a few of our favorite Scotland spots below for inspiration.
- Glasgow: Scotland’s largest city, about an hour’s drive west from Edinburgh. Here you’ll find the University of Glasgow, one of Scotland’s four ancient universities, and a thriving music and arts scene.
- Inverness: This town in the Scottish Highlands is much-visitied for its proximity to Loch Ness, home to the famous Loch Ness Monster.
- Aberdeenshire: A world-famous golf destination. Among the nearly 50 courses here is the Old Course at St. Andrews, which dates to the 15th century and was named the best course outside the United States by Golf Digest.
- Stirling: The hilltop Wallace National Monument—built in honor of the real-life Braveheart, William Wallace—rises up from this medieval town in the center of the country.
