It kicks off in earnest on day 2 with a city tour that includes a trip to Table Mountain, the Iziko South African Museum, and the 17th-century Castle of Good Hope.

  • Cape Winelands tour: On day 3, a full-day excursion into South Africa’s wine country takes you past mountain ranges, vineyards, and sprawling estates. You’ll get a chance to taste wines and visit award-winning restaurants in the town of Franschhoek, the country’s culinary capital.

  • Boulders Penguin Colony: Wooden walkways let you get up-close views of the adorable flightless waddlers.

Days 5 and 6: Johannesburg

After breakfast on day 5, you’ll be transported to the airport for a flight to Johannesburg, South Africa’s biggest city. On an afternoon tour, you’ll visit the Gandhi Memorial and get a bird’s-eye view of the skyline from the top of the Carlton Centre skyscraper.

  • Soweto tour: Day 6 begins with a look at some of the townships on the southwestern side of the city, where the struggle against the apartheid regime was waged from the 1950s until the early ’90s.
  • Apartheid Museum: Documentaries, texts, sound clips, and photos chronicle the days of sanctioned racial separation in South Africa.

Day 7: Panorama Route

Next, you’ll be driven along the showstopping Panorama Route of Mpumalanga (Zulu for “place where the sun rises”) on your way to Kruger National Park. Bring your camera—the views of mountains, waterfalls, rivers, and canyons are truly spectacular.

  • Blyde River Canyon, threaded through with its namesake river, stretches for roughly 15 miles.

Days 8 and 9: Kruger National Park

For the last leg of the trip, you’ll be taken to the Manyeleti Game Reserve in the African bush. Accommodations at the Honeyguide Mantobeni Camp let you get close to nature without skimping on luxe amenities and top-notch cuisine.

  • Keep your eyes peeled for the Big Five of African wildlife: lions, elephants, buffalo, leopards, and rhinos.
