Six-Night Safari Through East African Wilderness

With its constant movement of elephants, zebra herds, and lions, Kenya’s golden savannahs perfectly exemplify wild Africa's beauty. But the East African country also encompasses a varied terrain that ranges from fertile mountains to sun-baked deserts, attracting the likes of Teddy Roosevelt and Ernest Hemingway. Despite the influx of international visitors, Kenya's landscape still looks untouched, thanks in part to travel companies such as ET African Journeys that use guides trained in environmental conservation. During the nine-day, six-night Kenya safari with ET African Journeys, small groups will stay in luxury eco-lodges and explore the East African countryside for a look at the native wildlife.

International airfare is included with each trip via Ethiopian Airlines, which donates a portion of all bookings to the Just a Drop water-aid charity. Click here for an overview of the trip and full itinerary.

Days 1–2: Nonstop flights depart from Washington Dulles International Airport and arrive in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. Following a short layover, travelers fly to the Kenyan capital of Nairobi for a meet and greet at the centrally located Safari Park Hotel. The rest of the day is left to explore the city.

Days 3–5: From Nairobi, the trip passes through highlands and fields of barley to reach Masai Mara Game Reserve’s rolling grasslands, with accommodations at Masai Mara Sopa Lodge. One of Africa's finest wildlife sanctuaries, Masai is home to lions, black rhinos, and elephants, as well as giraffes that gather around posted salt licks for up-close viewing. During safaris in July, August, and September, you might be lucky enough to see the annual Mass Migration, when hundreds of thousands of wildebeest migrate through the region.

On the fifth day, the trip continues to Lake Nakuru, one of the best places in Kenya to spot leopards, with an overnight stay at Lake Nakuru Lodge. An afternoon game drive will travel around the lakefront, which is typically populated by the thousands of pink flamingos that gather to practice their synchronized swimming routine.

Days 6–9: The last leg of the journey includes two days in Amboseli National Park with accommodations at Amboseli Sopa Lodge, which sits in the wooded foothills of Mount Kilimanjaro. Because of Amboseli’s small size, it's easier to spot and get closer to the wildlife, including herds of free-roaming elephants. For a small park, Amboseli has an impressive variety of ecosystems, from lava-rock scrublands to swamps with marabou storks flying overhead.

The last two days bring the trip back to Nairobi for included return flights to Washington, DC.
