Explore Minnesota’s Northwoods

With this Getaway, you’ll choose between a 2-night stay in one of Gunflint Lodge’s classic cabins and a 4-night canoeing trip.

Gunflint Lodge

Gunflint Lodge sits along a 60-mile paved road that runs past glacier lakes and pine forests. Each classic cabin is equipped with a wood-burning fireplace, a kitchen or kitchenette, and a private bathroom.

  • Let someone else cook: Head to the onsite Red Paddle Bistro for panoramic lake views and hearty Northwoods cuisine.
  • Winter adventures: Glide across the snowy countryside on a dogsled or rent snowshoes or a snowmobile to explore on your own (additional fees apply).
  • When it’s warm, rent a boat to fish on Gunflint Lake or go ziplining through an old-growth white-pine forest (additional fees apply).

Canoeing Trip

You’ll spend the first night of your trip in a private bunkhouse at the lodge. The next day, you’ll get an orientation, maps, gear, and transportation to the drop-off site. At the end of your trip, you’ll be picked up from the landing for another night at the lodge. Click here for a full list of provided gear and here for suggested canoeing routes.

  • Lightweight canoes made of Royalex or Kevlar weigh less than aluminum canoes, making them easier to carry.
  • Locally sourced food: Pick from a menu of fresh, preservative-free Camp Chow foods. Portions are large, and vegetarian and gluten-free options are available.
  • Rest up in a spacious nylon tent, complete with a comfortable sleeping bag.
  • Custom packs have color-coded compartments for food, equipment, and your personal items.

Minnesota’s Northwoods: Paradise for Cross-Country Skiing and Canoeing

Northern Minnesota’s Northwoods region encompasses 1 million acres of wilderness, including more than 1,000 clear-water lakes. In November, snow starts to fall and doesn’t let up until April, routinely accumulating more than 100 inches each season. The landscape is a playground for cross-country skiers, who take to groomed trails weaving past a boreal forest, a deep cedar swamp, aspen hillsides, and scenic overlooks.

To see even more of the area, drive along the Gunflint Trail, a 57-mile scenic roadway that runs north from Grand Marais. At the northern reach of the trail lies the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness, a reserve with more than 1,200 miles of canoeing trails and off-the-beaten-path campgrounds. Strict visitor maximums and camping and canoeing regulations have helped keep the reserve ultrapristine—National Geographic Traveler magazine named it 1 of “50 Places of a Lifetime” in its “Paradise Found” category. If you’d prefer to stick to dry land, explore the countless hiking and biking trails in Superior National Forest.
