Hastings County, Ontario: Artisan Galleries Hidden Away in Eastern Ontario

Hastings County is located in eastern Ontario, about two hours from Toronto and Ottawa. It's a rural landscape full of lakes, rivers, and provincial parks. The county has one of the highest concentrations of artists in Ontario—there are twice as many artists here than the national average. Follow the Arts Route, and you’ll see the works of locals firsthand. Two galleries on the route are near the resort: The Old Hastings Gallery, housed in a circa-1890s general store, features themed rooms with decor crafted by Canadian artists, such as kaleidoscopes, beeswax candles, and soaps.

To experience the wilderness firsthand, visit Bon Echo Provincial Park. This is where you'll find Mazinaw Rock, which rises more than a half-mile above the lake and has more than 260 native pictographs etched into it. Canoe or kayak to the rock to see them up close.
