Family-Friendly Hotel in Heart of Pennsylvania Dutch Country

The city of Lancaster and the farmland surrounding it are located in the heart of Pennsylvania Dutch Country, a popular tourist destination that earned its name during the first influx of European immigrants that began nearly 300 years ago. The era lives on in numerous 18th-century churches and cultural museums throughout the area. Lancaster is perhaps better known, however, for its thriving Amish community. Horse-drawn buggies, one-room schoolhouses, and old-fashioned farms give the region a charming, old-timey feel. The Heritage Hotel, located off the main road that runs through this rural country, provides easy access to all of these sights.

Loxley's, a two-story, treehouse-style restaurant, is the Heritage Hotel’s crown jewel. Inside, an expansive bar festooned with arrowheads surrounds a living tree whose branches extend to the upper walls of the dining room. Signature plates include a half rack of County Faire pork ribs, pan-seared scallops, and a selection of half-pound burgers. On select nights, you can enjoy live entertainment before retiring to a contemporary guest room filled with handsome wood furnishings.

Lancaster County, Pennsylvania: Rural Farming Region with Large Amish Community and Rich Colonial History

Lancaster is located about 60 miles west of Philadelphia in the heart of Pennsylvania Dutch Country. It's an idyllic landscape of rolling farmland dotted with grazing cows, covered bridges, and horse-drawn carriages. Lancaster County is home to the largest Old Order Amish population in the country. For a glimpse into this fascinating culture, head to Lancaster Central Market, the oldest continuously operating farmers' market in the country (located 6 miles from the hotel). Here, vendors in traditional dress sell freshly ground horseradish, smoked sweet bologna, and other goods all year round.

At the nearby Landis Valley Village & Farm Museum, you can tour more than 15 historical buildings, including a farmstead and a country store, and watch costumed guides demonstrate pottery making and tinsmithing. The Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania, meanwhile, commemorates the region's rich locomotive history, allowing visitors a chance to operate the controls of a freight train and learn how steam engines work. Families will enjoy The Turkey Hill Experience, an attraction with interactive exhibits highlighting the process of locally made ice cream and ice tea.
