Historic Victorian Inn with Period Pieces and Gourmet Breakfast

Like the surrounding town of Snowflake, Heritage Inn Bed & Breakfast has been around since the late 19th century. The historic Victorian inn was originally built in 1890 as a pioneer home, and was inhabited by some of Snowflake’s first residents. A total restoration has equipped the hotel with modern amenities, including jacuzzi bathtubs and an aboveground spa. But abundant period pieces and en suite Waterford gas log stoves help the inn retain its place in history.

Husband-and-wife innkeepers Craig and JoAnne Guderian prepare a gourmet breakfast each morning and cakes, cookies, popcorn, and soft drinks are available throughout the day. Twelve guest rooms have been individually appointed with period antiques and vibrant color schemes. The #9 Prudence Kartchner Flake room features a four-poster bed and a clawfoot bathtub, whereas the #1 Ira Hinkley room has an antique queen bed and a jacuzzi bathtub.

Snowflake, Arizona: Pioneer Town Close to National Forests and Parks

Snowflake is a small, laid-back town located in eastern Arizona’s Navajo County, about 170 miles northeast of Phoenix and 115 miles southeast of Flagstaff. Founded in 1878 by the Mormon pioneers Erastus Snow and William Jordan Flake, Snowflake retains a prominent Mormon population, as evidenced by the architecturally stunning Snowflake Arizona Temple.

Just north of Snowflake, Petrified Forest National Park is a geological attraction 13,000 years in the making. Globally significant fossils from the Late Triassic period have been uprooted there, and shiny petrified wood abounds across 146 square miles of semi-desert steppe and colorful badlands.

Head south, and you’ll discover the Apache-Sitgreaves National Forests, which sprawl across more than 2 million acres of predominantly mountainous country. On the Sitgreaves side, which is closest to Snowflake, stands the awe-inspiring Mongollon Rim at nearly 8,000 feet high. This 200-mile-long escarpment features limestone and sandstone cliffs where you can take in the Colorado Plateau from a series of vista points.
