We enjoved staying in the renovated rooms of this quaint "old west" hotel. The staff made us feel very welcome and answered any questions we had about the area. I would definitely come back again if I were going to be staying in the area.

Hotel at a Glance: Hotel Charlotte

In the late 19th century, Charlotte DeFerrari emigrated from Italy to California with her family in pursuit of gold. After losing her father in a mining accident, she supported the family by cooking meals for ranch hands and local settlers. Between 1918 and 1921, Charlotte opened a restaurant and a boutique hotel—now known as Hotel Charlotte—in the Sierra Nevada foothills. Husband-and-wife innkeepers Jenn and Doug Edwards preserve the property’s historical integrity with period furnishings and a mural depicting the area in the frontier days.

  • Start the day with a continental breakfast with homemade baked goods and fresh roasted coffee.
  • Indulgent perks: A bottle of wine and dessert are included with this getaway.
  • Guest rooms feature complimentary Internet and satellite TV, plus design touches such as patchwork quilts and clawfoot tubs.
  • Bring the family: Spacious vacation rentals in the gated community of Pine Mountain Lake house 4–10 guests and have full kitchens, washers and dryers, and fireplaces.
  • Swing by happy hour at the inn’s restaurant, Fork & Love, which serves small plates alongside local wines and draft beers.
  • Outdoor pursuits: The hotel is a 30-minute drive from Yosemite National Park and a 90-minute drive from Badger Pass Ski Area.

Groveland, California: Historic Town near Yosemite National Park and Ski Areas

After the gold rush subsided, Groveland became a boomtown once more—between 1915 and 1935—as the base of operations for the Hetch Hetchy water project, a massive plan to bring fresh water to San Francisco. These days, natural resources remain the area’s biggest draw. Groveland borders nearly 1 million acres of woodlands and miles of rivers comprising Stanislaus National Forest.

The small town has remained a popular stop on the route to Yosemite National Park, which lies about a 30-minute drive east. A year-round destination, the park has seasonal activities ranging from hiking and fishing in the summer to skiing in the winter. “About the only thing you can’t do in Yosemite is surf,” Frommer’s says, citing the rock climbing here as some of the world’s best thanks to the sustained cracks in the canyons. Winter in Yosemite is a tranquil period as traffic decreases, allowing visitors to take in the snowy mountainscapes at their own paces. For a guided excursion, visit one of the local Groveland tour companies for a custom “they drive you” trip through Yosemite Valley.
