Two-Night Stay at Hotel Charlotte in Groveland, CA

Historical Boutique Hotel in Sierra Nevada Foothills

Charlotte DeFerrari was born in Italy in 1881 and migrated with her family to Groveland in the late 19th century in pursuit of gold. After losing her father to a mining accident, Charlotte supported her family by cooking meals for ranch hands and local settlers. Between 1918 and 1921, she opened a restaurant and later a boutique hotel, which stands to this day as Hotel Charlotte.

Husband-and-wife innkeepers Jenn and Doug Edwards have worked to protect the property's historical integrity with period appointments and distinctive accents, such as a mural depicting Groveland's frontier days.

Upstairs, the individually decorated guest rooms call to mind frontier days with details such as patchwork quilts, clawfoot tubs, and brass bed frames. Alternatively, the hotel’s vacation rentals, which house between four and six guests and are located in the gated community of Pine Mountain Lake, all have a full kitchen, a washer and dryer, and a barbecue grill and fireplace. You can access a swimming pool, tennis courts, and balconies that overlook the community’s golf course.

Every morning, the innkeepers prepare a breakfast buffet with a spread of pancakes, scrambled eggs, sausages in the bistro.

Groveland, California: Historic Town Near Yosemite National Park

After the gold rush subsided, Groveland became a boomtown once more—between 1915 and 1935—as the base of operations of the Hetch Hetchy water project, a massive plan to bring fresh water to San Francisco. These days, natural resources remain the area’s biggest draw. Groveland borders nearly a million acres of woodlands comprising the Stanislaus National Forest.

The small town has remained a popular destination on the route to Yosemite National Park, about a 30-minute drive to the east. Winter in Yosemite is a tranquil period as traffic decreases, allowing visitors to take in the snowy mountainscapes at their own pace. Some hiking trails remain open through the valley, and plows clear the roads leading up to downhill and cross-country ski areas.
