Hotel at a Glance: Hotel Punta Teonoste
The beachfront Hotel Punta Teonoste was designed to complement and harmoniously exist with its natural surroundings. Each two-story bungalow was built using local, renewable materials and uniquely designed with handcrafted bamboo furniture, tiles, and fabrics made by Nicaraguan artisans. Watch the sunset from beneath the open-air restaurant’s thatched roof. The restaurant serves exotic fruits and grass-fed meats supplied by local farmers, as well as seafood from the nearby fishing town of El Astillero. As an eco-hotel, the bungalows at Hotel Punta Teonoste do not have AC, but they can provided for a surcharge of $30 per night.
- Included with your stay: a welcome drink, plus a dinner for two
- Private beach: Sunbathe or play volleyball on the soft, pink sand of the resort’s secluded mile-long beach.
- Rooms with a view: Watch the waves crash in from your bungalow’s private balcony.
- Get a massage in your bungalow or at the spa, which also offers acupuncture, body scrubs, and facials.
- What to do: For an additional charge, go horseback riding on the beach, or try surfing and boogie boarding with the hotel’s equipment. Other activities available to purchase include mountain biking, playing board games, swimming in the pool, and visiting the onsite turtle nursery.
Tola, Nicaragua: Undisturbed Tropical Wildlife and Secluded Beaches
The beaches lining Nicaragua’s southeastern coast have earned this region the nickname “Pacific Riviera.” You’ll find everything from wild, craggy shores to pink- and white-sand beaches ideal for swimming. Fishing is popular here, too—head to the quaint villages of El Astillero and Popoyo to snag sailfish, wahoo, or tuna on a fishing charter (you might spot dolphins along the way).
Located a few miles inland, the town of Tola is a gateway to eco-adventures in Nicaragua’s dense tropical forests. Zipline tours are a great way to experience the jungle and to see wildlife like howler monkeys. The Mombacho and Masaya coastal volcanoes are just 90 minutes north of Tola. Though the 4,000-foot Mombacho is dormant, one of the Masaya craters still emits smoke and gas. Head east across the Rivas Isthmus to explore the Wildlife Reserve Río Escalante-Chacocente. Every year between July and December, thousands of turtles return to the sand here to lay their eggs.
