Tranquil Beachside Bungalows on Secluded Island

The French Polynesian island of Huahine is located in the South Pacific near Moorea, Bora Bora, and Tahiti. Since it draws fewer visitors than its high-profile neighbors, Huahine remains an unspoiled paradise. At the Huahine Te Tiare Beach Resort in the southwest corner of the isle, thatched roof bungalows can be found hovering on stilts above the turquoise sea and tucked into thick jungle foliage just a short walk from white sand beaches. Upon arrival at the resort, you’ll be greeted with a shell necklace and a tropical cocktail—an official welcome to island living.

Set right over the ocean, Deep Overwater bungalows feature sundecks. Garden bungalows, meanwhile, sit amid lush, tropical flora in the rainforest. All units face westward for spectacular sunset views. In the morning, guests can dig into an American breakfast buffet.

At the onsite restaurant, The Ari’i, chef Jean Frédéric Markacz pairs locally grown produce with fresh seafood plucked from the lagoon. If you’re in the mood for dinner and a show, catch the Polynesian Buffet and Dance Show. After filling up on barbecued meats, fresh fish, and desserts, sit back and watch Tahitian musicians and dancers perform traditional routines. Te Tiare Beach Resort also offers snorkeling, boat trips, and jet-ski rentals.

Huahine, French Polynesia: Secluded Island Paradise Rich in History

Nicknamed the “Garden Island,” verdant Huahine is actually comprised of two islands, known as Big and Little. There are several adventurous ways to explore either one of them—on horseback, by sailboat, or aboard a four-wheel-drive vehicle. A historical tour is also worth your time. From an archaeological standpoint, Huahine is one of the most significant Polynesian islands, right up there with Easter Island and Raiatea. The hotel can help arrange an excursion to the ancient capital city of Maeva, where digs have excavated the remains of a prehistoric village and ancient temples known as marae.

Located just a few miles from the hotel is Eden Parc, a 12-acre botanical fruit garden, where you can sample native coconuts, passion fruit, and guava. Grab some fruit juice to go before heading to nearby Avea Bay to experience what Frommer’s calls “one of French Polynesia’s most glorious beaches.”
