Championship Golf at Historical Coachella Valley Resort

The Mountain Course’s signature fifth hole, the island green, is a tough shot to make, especially because there are gorgeous views of the Santa Rosa Mountains and towering palm trees throughout the course. The historical Indian Palms Country Club and Resort has a total of 27 holes of championship golf, each presenting its own unique challenges amid the stunning Coachella Valley scenery. Groupon buyers receive discounts on golf, too.

Indian Palms was originally the property of world-famous aviatrix Jackie Cochran, the first woman to break the sound barrier; she lived on this sprawling 640-acre ranch with her movie-studio-owning husband, Floyd Odlum. Many notable guests have passed through, including presidents and movie stars, but perhaps the most famous guest was Amelia Earhart, who was Jackie’s good friend. Earhart spent the last months of her life on the property, riding horses and swimming in the pool before her fateful last flight.

Since transforming into a resort, Indian Palms has upgraded its property to include a second pool, five tennis courts, and La Palma Restaurant & Bar, which features an outdoor terrace where you can get views of the mountains.

Greater Palm Springs, California: Outdoor Recreation and Hollywood History

Indian Palms Country Club and Resort is located in Indio, just 24 miles from Palm Springs. It’s nestled in the Coachella Valley in the Sonoran Desert, and it’s a quiet, secluded area that typically gets more than 350 days of sunshine per year.

If you have time, make the trip down the Sonny Bono Memorial Freeway to Palm Springs. ln the 20th century, Hollywood A-listers flocked here for its temperate weather and tucked-away feel. Word spread quickly, and by the 1950s and 1960s, the landscape was dotted with tennis courts, swimming pools, and flashy modern homes owned by the likes of Elvis and Frank Sinatra.

Though it experienced a lull at the turn of the century, Palm Springs has emerged once again as a vacation hot spot. Luxury spas and boutique shops cover the glitzy downtown area. There's an old, kitschy feel that still survives in the city, which is now surrounded by retro midcentury hotels and classic Mediterranean-inspired villas.
