Days 1–3: Arrival and Guided Tour of Cape Town

Take an overnight flight via Emirates Airlines to Cape Town, the legislative capital and cosmopolitan center of South Africa. Cape Town’s diverse landscape is surrounded by white-sand beaches and dominated by Table Mountain, a 3,500-foot behemoth that provides stunning views of the cityscape (it’s even featured on Cape Town’s flag). On Day 3, the group takes a half-day guided tour of the city.

  • Castle of Good Hope: Tour this 17th-century fortress to see giant cannons on the ramparts, and remnants of the original moat at ground level.
  • Table Mountain Cableway: Ride a cable car to the summit of the mountain, which is covered with wildflowers and shiny silvertrees. Look down and you’ll see the city and distant Robben Island, where Nelson Mandela served out his prison sentence.
  • Protea Hotel Sea Point: Spend 6 nights in a superior room at this award-winning hotel set just a few hundred feet from the shore. You can while away a day in the swimming pool before dining at the onsite steak house.

Days 4–8: Leisure Time in Cape Town

Spend the remainder of the trip exploring at your leisure. Below, you’ll find a couple of our suggestions, and some side trips you can schedule with the tour company (extra fees apply). On Day 8, you’ll board a plane for your flight back home.

  • Visit the trendy Victoria & Alfred Waterfront (called the V&A for short) for shopping, dining, and people watching in Cape Town’s working harbor, which dates back to 1860.
  • Eat like a local: Start out with bobotie, a traditional Malay dish similar to meatloaf garnished with chutney and a baked egg. For dessert, nibble koeksisters, but be warned: the braided and fried pastry can be very sweet.
  • Cape Point full-day tour: Board a boat that sails along the scenic Atlantic coast, past Cape Point and to the famous Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens (US$75 or C$90 per person). You may also take a ride on Chapman’s Peak Drive, one of the most stunning roadways in the world.
  • Winelands full-day tour: This optional tour takes you through the valleys and vineyards about an hour’s drive east of Cape Town. You’ll enjoy tours and tastings at three wineries as well as a tour of the picturesque town of Stellenbosch (US$75 or C$90 per person).
