Days 1 and 2: Arrival and Nairobi

After an overnight transatlantic flight, you’ll arrive in Nairobi on day 2. A tour representative will meet you at the airport and take you to the InterContinental Hotel, where you’ll spend the night.

Days 3 and 4: Samburu National Reserve

On the morning of day 3, the tour travels north to Samburu National Reserve, a semidesert park located in the middle of the country. During your 2 days here, you’ll go on two game drives.

• Animals you might see: zebras, ostriches, reticulated giraffes, big cats, and elephants (at least 900 pachyderms live here)
• The setting: The Ewaso Ng’iro River flows through the park, which is a mixture of forest, grassland, and desert.
• Where you’ll stay: in a luxury tent at Ashnil Samburu Camp, near the river

Day 5: Lake Nakuru National Park

The next stop is Lake Nakuru, famous for its huge concentration of flamingos. Sometimes there are so many, you can see more pink than water.

• Keep your eyes peeled for leopards napping on the branches of yellow-barked acacias.
• Other animals you might see: lions, hippos, baboons, the rare black rhino, and the endangered rothschild’s giraffe

Days 6 and 7: Maasai Mara National Reserve

The last park on the itinerary is the country’s famous Maasai Mara, Kenya’s most visited game reserve (and where much of Out of Africa, starring Meryl Streep and Robert Redford, was filmed). During two game drives here, you could catch sight of the Big Five—lions, elephants, buffalo, leopards, and rhinos.

• The setting: Connected to Serengeti National Park in neighboring Tanzania, Maasai Mara is marked by green grassland and iconic acacia trees.

Day 8: Nairobi and Departure

On the way back to Nairobi, you’ll drive through the Great Rift Valley, passing lakes, Mount Longonot (a dormant volcano), and possibly herds of grazing giraffes and gazelles. When you get to the city, you’ll be transported to the airport to catch your return flight to the United States.
